Jon Boyz in Harrisonburg, Virginia
February 10, 2014:
We stopped at Jon Boyz Barbecue in Harrisonburg, based on the hour, our hunger and treacherous Trip Advisor recommendations.
I had the Carolina chopped barbecue sandwich — sandwich, chips, and drink for $5.99. It was an automatic but bad decision. Jon Boyz seems to be more of a burger place, bless their hearts. (They have a half-beef, half sausage burger that sounded good, and the owner seems like a good guy.) But I went with the barbecue. The pork had little flavor and a mushy texture, and the Carolina barbecue sauce – which I chose over the regular sauce, which they say is sweet, tasted of sugar (!) rather than pepper. The iced tea was lousy, but the potato chips were fine.
Next door, however, was the saving grace. They have very good frozen custard. Not Katy’s of Waco, TX, good, but very rich and flavorful. It has the Nancy Tanner seal of approval, than which there is no greater honor for frozen custard.
