Jedward
Jedward has got to be the most BIZARRE pop stars I’ve encountered since…well…Vanilla Ice! Before the editorial, Jedward is John and Edward Grimes, then 17-year-old twins who joined Simon Cowell’s The X Factor, and wasn’t booted off until week 7. They’re lookers alright, but they have got to be the most annoying pair of teeners I’ve seen in a long time. They were called “cocky” and “cheeky” by the Brit judges. Here, have a look at their audition yourself:
Critics were shocked they made it so far, with so little talent, and coasting alone on sheer charm and good looks, but in the UK, they are a full blown phenomenon, with their carrier single peaking at number two, not bad for a pair of often off-key pop stars. During the competition, the peak of just how cluelessly queer (the non-gay definition) their act is, they did an almost grotesque burlesque complete with unflinching romantic dialogue between the two brothers. Many balked at the unwitting reference to gay twincest, but the boys are straight as they come. They really just are unbelievably clueless as to what they’re doing. They just want to be famous, and they’ll do whatever it takes to get any kind of attention that they can. You’ll either love them, or loathe them. Here’s the clip of their Britney number. I felt so embarrassed watching this that I almost couldn’t watch it through, because it was such a train wreck of a performance. Operative word: almost. It was such a guilty pleasure watching them make a mess so fabulously. I dare you to not either shake your head in disbelief or outright ROTFL. That’s the perfect example of a hot mess. Out of tune and out of beat, they performed like they were the biggest stars on the planet. Amazing.
For all we know they’ll be just another Vanilla Ice, done before they even start, but they’ve bucked the odds many times before, so who knows? Let me end this with the original hot mess, the maestro himself:
