Jay Adams, On Addressing the Heart
“Outward change may appear good to others, even to oneself, when in God’s sight it is not. If, for example, you stop robbing people, they still have their money, and you don’t go to jail; the results are socially good. But, if that outward change goes not involve a change of heart toward God, it creates a self-satisfied person who, to that extent, has become a Pharisee. External changes that do not follow an internal change of heart toward God always move a person further away from the Lord. So, change that is socially good may be religiously evil.” (How to Help People Change, pg. 6)
