Impromptu Greatness

  • “I’m the king of the world!” – Leonardo DiCaprio as Jack Dawson in Titanic (1997)

  • “Wanna hear the most annoying sound in the world?” – Jim Carrey as Lloyd Christmas in Dumb and Dumber (1994)

  • “Have fun storming the castle!” — Billy Crystal and Carol Kane as Miracle Max and Valerie in The Princess Bride (1987). According to Crystal, the two actors improvised most of their dialogue in this movie.

  • Taxi Driver

  • “Alright, alright, alright!” – Matthew McConoughey as Wooderson in Dazed and Confused (1993)

  • “I’m a zit! Get it?” – John Belushi as John Blutarsky in Animal House (1978)

  • “Father, Son, and House of Gucci.” – Lady Gaga as Patrizia Reggiani in House of Gucci (2021)

  • “Hey! You’re Rick f***’n Dalton. Don’t you forget it!” – Brad Pitt as Cliff Booth in Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood (2019)

  • “Hey, I’m walking here!” – Dustin Hoffman as Ratso in Midnight Cowboy (1969)

  • “I know.” – Harrison Ford as Han Solo in The Empire Strikes Back (1980) [Of course, this is his memorable answer to Princess Leia telling him she loved him.]

  • “Warriors… come out to play-ay!” – David Patrick Kelly as Luther in The Warriors (1979)

  • “Leave the gun. Take the cannoli.” – Richard Castellano as Clemenza in The Godfather (1972)

  • “I am Iron Man.” – Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark in Iron Man (2008)

  • “My wife used to fart in her sleep. One night it was so loud it woke the dog up.” – Robin Williams as Dr. Sean Maguire in Good Will Hunting (1997) [And Matt Damon laughing at this in the movie was a genuine reaction. He didn’t know Williams was going to say that.]

  • When Harry Met Sally

  • “You can’t handle the truth!” – Jack Nicholson as Col. Jessup in A Few Good Men (1992) [The original line in the script was “You already have the truth!”]

  • That creepy sound Anthony Hopkins makes in Silence of the Lambs (1991) after saying he ate a man’s liver with some fava beans and a chianti.

  • The Shining

  • “You’re going to need a bigger boat.” – Roy Scheider as Brody in Jaws (1975). Apparently, this was a line that the actors jokingly said on set making fun of the tiny boat that Spielberg ended up using because of his tiny budget. Scheider using it during this scene made it make sense and they kept it in. Thankfully, too. It’s one of the best lines ever.

  • “Here’s looking at you kid.” – Humphrey Bogart as Rick Blaine in Casablanca (1942)

And 10 greatest “just-go-with-it” scenes:The following are all scenes where the actors had a curve ball thrown at them, they improvised on the spot, and made some of the most memorable moments in movies.

  • Steve Carrell’s chest wax scene in The 40 Year Old Virgin

  • Leo cuts his hand in Django Unchained (2012)

  • Chunk’s “Truffle Shuffle” in The Goonies (1985)

  • Dustin Hoffman farts in the phone booth, Rain Man (1988)

Benicio del Toro’s fart

  • in the criminal line-up in The Usual Suspects (1995). It was supposed to be a serious scene but del Toro’s foul stench had the rest of the guys laughing, which they surprisingly used in the final cut of the movie.

  • Tarzan’s yell in Tarzan the Ape Man (1932). Expert yodeler Johnny Weissmuller made up himself. The producer simply instructed him to make a loud cry that Tarzan could use to summon his jungle friends.

  • Just about every line Robin Williams speaks in his broadcasts (as Adrian Cronauer) in Good Morning Vietnam (1987). The director mostly just let him go and it turned into movie magic.

  • Indiana shoots the swordsman in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). Harrison Ford wasn’t feeling to well one day on set, and so was not really very fond of the idea of a fight scene. When the showdown was about to happen he pulled out a prop gun and pretended to shoot the guy. Spielberg loved it, and so did all of us!

“Funny how?”

  • – Joe Pesci in Goodfellas (1990). If you haven’t seen Goodfellas (1990), this scene alone makes it worth watching. The whole dialogue was mostly improvised and was based on an experience Pesci had as a young man when he made the mistake of telling a tough guy that he thought he was funny.

  • Robin Williams’ melting face mask, Mrs. Doubtfire. So Williams’ character is pretending to be a woman for a specific reason. There’s a scene when someone comes to his apartment, someone he is trying to fool with this getup, and he’s not in costume. He quickly tries to dress up but can’t get his prosthetic mask on. Thinking on his feet he pushes his face into a cream pie in the fridge and pretends he has a facemask on. In this scene he makes coffee and asks if the visitor wants cream and a dollop falls from his face into the mug. This coffee joke was Williams’ idea when the hot studio lights were melting the cream on his face causing it to drip off.

Congratulations Thor: Ragnarok. This is your week.

And the Oscar goes to…

Best Actress:

Kate Winslet as Alex Martin in The Mountain Between Us

Best Actor: LaKeith Stanfield as Cherokee Bill in The Harder They Fall

Best Quote: “I’m made of rocks, as you can see, but don’t let that intimidate you. You don’t need to be afraid, unless you’re made of scissors! Just a little Rock, Paper, Scissors joke for you.” – Taika Waititi as Korg in Thor: Ragnarok

The reason I chose to write about the above subject is because I recently read that the director of Thor: Ragnarok, Taika Waititi, claimed that 80% of the dialogue was improvised. And that’s pretty impressive. This movie is so funny, and really anyone can enjoy it regardless of how little they know about or enjoy Marvel movies.
