Director: Danny Cannon
Starring: Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr., Brandy Norwood
The murderous fisherman with a hook is back to once again stalk the two surviving teens, Julie and Ray, who had left him for dead, as well as cause even more murder and mayhem, this time at a posh island resort.
1997’s ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ is a cult classic and one of the most memorable slasher movies. It was followed by the bad ‘I Still Know What You Did Last Summer’ (cool title, though), and the awful ‘I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer’. Here we are with the latest installment in the series, but I’m confused. Is this a reboot, a sequel, or a spoof?
If you’re familiar with the original film, you know the premise. A Group of young people causes an accident and now they’re being stalked and slashed by the victim, blah-blah, you know the story. I have several issues with this film, which – in my opinion – should never have been made because it could potentially ruin the original movie. It’s also just too much of a coincidence for the same thing to happen twice…
Our heroin is… who is it again? Oh, the characters are so forgettable… I suppose its meant to be Ava Brooks, but I didn’t find her a strong enough character to be the heroin. If this was intended to be a reboot, they should have disregarded the previous films and have an original new story. But they even reference the 1997 incident, and bring back Ray Robinson (Freddie Prinze Jr.) and Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt) from the original film, and Helen Shivers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) makes a guest appearance. So then its meant to be a sequel, right, and not a reboot?
Yeah, there certainly is a lot of nostalgia here, but my point is, this should have felt like an original. (In the movie one of the characters even say “It’s 1997 all over again. Isn’t that nostalgic?”) Yeah, right. It really does feel like a spoof. And why is the killer killing innocent people, and not just those who were involved in the accident? As if the twist reveal isn’t ridiculous enough, it is followed by another twist reveal, which is simply not believable.
Ok, now for a spoiler, so this is the part where you need to STOP READING if you intend watching it and want to be surprised. As it turns out, our young victims are not being stalked and killed by Sam aka The Fisherman, who was in the crash. Oh, no, that poor guy died. The killer is one of the girls (yup, a woman) who was present at the time of the accident, and now wants revenge for his death because he was her friend…yawn, already…not motive enough and definitely not believe because SHE WAS THERE!! Ok, to make it even worse, she was helped by Ray! Yup, Ray, the survivor from the original film is now a slasher killer! They try to justify his actions, but this is pure stupidity all the way!!
If you’ve seen the original, I can’t recommend this. If you haven’t seen the original, I recommend you do.
Would I watch it again? Definitely not.
