I am Mother (2019)

Director: Grant Sputore
Starring: Rose Byrne, Maddie Lenton, Luke Hawker
In the wake of humanity’s extinction, a teenage girl is raised by a robot designed to repopulate the earth. But their unique bond is threatened when an inexplicable stranger arrives with alarming news.
‘I am Mother’ is a post apocalyptic film of a very different kind. When I realized there were only two main actors, I wasn’t sure how they were going to make this interesting. As it turns out, this was very interesting!
‘I am Mother’ is as captivating as it is fascinating. This is a very unique film. With so few characters, it nevertheless kept me glued to the screen, hungry for more! The film reminded me of films like ’10 Cloverfield Lane’, ‘Ex Machina’ and even ‘2001: A Space Odyessey’.
Clara Rugaard is excellent as Daughter, and carried the film with ease. The film gives us information that needs time to be consumed to be fully understood, and some information will only be understood towards the end – but you have to look and listen very carefully, or you might think the writers made a mistake…
The film is wonderfully mysterious and cleverly so. It honestly does keep you guessing until the end. It even features a scene that was a bit too graphic for comfort, with incredibly realistic make-up. The subdued score was atmospheric and highly effective. (The film deservedly won the ‘Score of the Year’ award).
‘I am Mother’ is one of those rare gems that offers so much more than you expected, and will benefit from more than one viewing. This was amazing.
Would I watch it again? Yes.
