How “Fall Guys” Is Bringing My Girlfriend And I Closer Together.

When I first met my partner some *cough* years ago we, like most potential couples, tried to build a rapport. Engage in the obligatory pageantry of getting to know you, getting to know all about you. Or at least the moderately lucid aspects of your personality that you’re comfortable sharing! Exhibiting a deceptive perception of yourself that broadly alludes to your innate anxieties and perversions. If I had introduced myself as an anti social, people hating shut in, that spends more money of computer games than on my own appearance, I would say my chances of securing a second date would decrease dramatically! You are reticent to reveal too much about your own furtive neurosis in case you naturally scare them off. Blunting the edge as it were. So you have to be tactical, perhaps a little aloof. Identify similarities to quickly establish that our little idiosyncrasies are compatible eccentricities. Though much of our allotted time together now is beset by the flailing burglar alarm that is our daughter, like most devoted parents we still share a vested, though fleeting interest in the preservation each others company. We of course disagree on a many a great thing, including movies, music, politics, books and the irrelevance of a mesh shower pouf in today’s society. But the release of “Fall Guys” has reconciled a long since dormant affinity for gaming that used to unite us.

I’d be remiss to claim that my girlfriend is anything other than ambivalent to the world of gaming now. With her knowledge of the industry not extending past the “Worms” series. Though I’ve made numerous attempts to convert her, with scattered success, I could hardly admit that our relationship has been enriched by its integration. But when I explained the particulars of this game, players competing in a variety of challenges to qualify for the next round of a Takeshi’s Castle style elimination contest, she was eager, if a little hesitant to play against real opposition. But after a quick tutorial of the basics and a little backseat gaming from me, she was beginning to enjoy herself. After a few expletive laden exits and various accusatory exasperations directed at snack based saboteurs and shorts wearing pigeons, she advanced to the second and even third stage with consistent regularity. And it was nice.

Most of our evenings are spent unwinding from our respective days, lamenting the rigours of life and watching Cold Case mysteries. But with Fall Guys I’ve been presented with a unique opportunity to legitimately game whilst fulfilling my obligations as a not husband. To engage in a way that isn’t necessarily intimate, but certainly in a way that is less routine. A more organic interaction that wasn’t restricted by the banality of lethargic conversing. The usual “How was your day?”. “Have you had a good day?”. “Are you OK?”. It’s comforting to know that after *cough* years together, numerous contrasts in personality and the burden of raising a child demon that familiarity hasn’t bred contempt. We are both strangely compatible, playing a game that is suitably deranged.

What do you guys think of “Fall Guys”? Let me know in the comments below. Cheers.
