Hooray for Discipline?
“Blessed is the man whom You discipline, O LORD, and whom teach out of Your law, to give him rest from days of trouble, until a pit is dug for the wicked” (Psalm 94:12-13)
We normally despise disciple. No one enjoys spankings, timeouts or groundings. And, even as adults, pay cuts for a lack of performance or late fees on a credit card bill are not welcomed friends.
Did you notice that the psalmist called discipline a blessing?
Discipline makes us better. Remember what Solomon wrote, “My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline or be weary of his reproof, for THE LORD REPROVES HIM WHOM HE LOVES, as a father the son in whom he delights” (Prov 3:11-12). When we experience a trial involving discipline, we should be thankful that God loves us enough to chasten us.
The discipline comes not only as a means of proving God’s love but as a means of teaching us God’s Word. Divine discipline corrects unbiblical living.
