Heavenly Biscuits, Fort Myers Beach, Florida
If you want advice on biscuits, and never think that you don’t need advice on biscuits, ask David Sanders. Not that David Sanders, silly, the one who’s a cellist with the Chicago Symphony. He’s also a world class expert on pies, pastries, ice cream, and barbecue, among many other types of food. It was from David that I leaned about Sunshine Biscuit Kitchen and their preternaturally buttery biscuits. For that alone I owe him a great debt. Now if, like me, you go barging around eating breakfast without consulting David, you’ll miss a lot of great biscuits, one of the glories of Creation. That’s what happened to me, and I have paid with sighs aplenty, and sold with endless rue.
As I’ve mentioned, Nancy and I spent a day in downtown Fort Myers — a truly delightful day — due to street closings for the Edison Festival of Light. We never made our planned foray to the beach. It was only later that I learned that we also missed an opportunity to have what David assures me is some aptly named Heavenly Biscuits in Fort Myers Beach. Here are their biscuits shown with another proof of a benevolent Providence, bacon.

Don’t the biscuits look nice! And doesn’t the bacon look crisp! And abundant. You can get bacon or sausage or fried chicken or steak or eggs and the like on your biscuit, but you’ll note that David has not made a sandwich. Regular readers will note that I dote on biscuit sandwiches, preferably with either sausage or country ham and often egg and cheese. David concentrates on the biscuit itself, and concentrates on the bacon separately. I can appreciate that with a truly great biscuit and good crisp bacon, a sandwich may be less than the sum of its parts. That happens. Woodford Reserve and cane sugar Coca Cola are both joys to taste. The combination, however, stinks. (Your views may differ.)
There’s much more. The ovens at Heavenly Biscuits also pour forth cinnamon rolls, which can boast David’s seal of approval.

I can almost smell that cinnamon roll. It’s their Sinful Cinnamon Roll. I take that as evidence of a broad-minded ecumenical kitchen. As if that weren’t enough, Heavenly Biscuits also offers a pecan roll and banana bread pudding, both apparently unaffiliated. And they serve eggs (as a side), home fries, gravy, and the like.
It’s a nice looking setting.

Heavenly Biscuits looks like a wonderful place to enjoy a biscuit or a cinnamon roll — or a sausage egg and cheese biscuit or … write your own order. You can rest assured on the authoritative testimony of David Sanders that the biscuits and cinnamon rolls are well worth a detour. I’ll be there on my next trip near Fort Myers Beach, Festival or no Festival, and you should go there if you get half a chance.
