Happy Constitution Day and National Voter Registration Day

This year National Voter Registration Day falls on Constitution Day — the stars are alligned to send a message: vote November 5 to save the U.S. Constitution.

Well into the 20th century we used to describe America as a young nation, but there is one important way in which it is actually the oldest. Our supreme governing document, the U.S. Constitution (signed 1787, ratified 1788, enacted 1789) is the longest surviving continuously implemented national constitution in the world. It changed the planet, became a template for most of the others that have been written since, and has proven flexible enough to adapt to changing times. Numerous recent developments have raised awareness about the urgent need for major overhaul of the document, but I’ve decided to save a post about that for next year, when we’re either out of the woods, or in the middle of a forest fire, and in either case will be observing the sesquicentennial of the American Revolution. Right now, the Constitution needs saving.

We’re given a very clear choice of candidates in that regard. One (Harris) would respect our institutions as they have been established, and preserve and protect them as the Presidential oath of office dictates, which is why some mighty dyed-in-the wool conservatives like George Will, the Cheneys, and countless high up staffers of the Reagan, both Bush, and Trump administrations have taken the drastic step of endorsing the Democrat Harris. Trump, on the other hand, has demonstrated by both words and deeds his intention to eliminate the Constitution’s provisions for checks and balances, effectively altering America’s form of government into a dictatorship run by a single executive, unanswerable to the Courts, Congress, or the People themselves. It’s as simple as that. America has succeeded as it has for so long for the very reason that no one person is allowed to wield that much power, let alone an individual so lacking in character, knowledge, competency or humanity.

Read the Constitution! I am astounded at the prospect of any American adult who hasn’t done so. I have read it repeatedly throughout my life. I was exposed to it NUMEROUS times in school, and refer back to it whenever the news of the day raises a question. EVERY AMERICAN IS SUPPOSED TO DO THIS. It is YOUR Constitution. You’ll see what is protected, what is allowed, what the guard rails are. Like I said, it’s not perfect, and it has occasionally been expediently ignored by some of our leaders, but it is quite literally your only bulwark against tyranny and the arbitrary abuse of the citizenry by our government. Harris will preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution; Trump (who has never read it and has unceasingly demonstrated his lack of respect for it throughout his public life) will set it on fire. So please, register to vote, and then vote to preserve the Constitution.
