Happy 2nd Birthday to my blog!
Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday Dear Cruising Costco, Happy Birthday to you!
If the blog actually got a cake, I’m sure it would be the chocolate layer monstrosity from Costco! Alas, there will be no cake to celebrate…just this post. (Although, I really do need an occasion to have that cake…hmmm…does wanting to review it for the blog justify a purchase of it?…hey, it is a public service, right? Maybe soon…)
When I first started reading blogs several years ago, the idea of writing my own was appealing, as I have always enjoyed casual writing and often received praise for my ability to write in a conversation-like style. However, I didn’t know about what I would write and had trouble believing that enough other people would be interested in reading what I wrote. However, I decided to try out a few ideas and this one stuck. Coming from a Costco-loving family, the subject of Costco often came up in conversation anyway, I was there frequently, and a large percentage of my food came from there. So, it made sense for me to write what I know and experience. I figured that I could also review products that I already liked and/or wanted to try and that it might even be a way for me to try new items. In addition to product reviews, I figured that I could write about some of the unique practices behind the company, comment on articles written about the store, and throw in a few humorous posts as well.
When I sent my first few posts to friends and family, they enjoyed them (although, really, would they have told me if they didn’t?), and then I noticed that I was getting other readers as well (especially when I would also use Twitter to draw attention to new posts–I rarely use it but maybe I should more).
So, as we head into the third year of the blog, do you have any suggestions?
I am thinking about trying to get more “guest” posts. I had my dad write one but it may be time for some others, especially because then products that I do not use or eat can be reviewed (e.g., meat).
Any products you would especially like to see reviewed?
Any other suggestions?
What are your favorite things to read? If you return to the blog time after time, what brings you back?
As a “present”, please pass the links along to others who like/are interested in Costco–the more readers the better!
