Hammer Down Athletes of the Week
By S. Samek
Strong performances were in abundancy during this week of fall sports. Two players excelled, one in victory, the other in defeat. Presenting you with Hammer Down’s best for the week of 10/24 to 10/30.
Women’s Cross Country – Emily Latimer:

Latimer won the gold at the Presidents’ Athletic Conference women’s cross country Championships Saturday on a hilly St. Vincent course.
Emily Latimer edged out twin sister Katie Latimer – a prior Hammer Down Athlete of the Week – to secured the victory. Emily Latimer jolted across the finish line breaking the tape with a 23:15 ahead of her sister’s 23:37.
Emily’s title is the first in Waynesburg cross country history. The team matched Latimer’s performance by securing the team gold, scoring 21 points, which is also a first in program history. In addition to the Latimer’s top two spots, the Jackets placed six or the remaining runners in the top 10.
Waynesburg defeated second-place and 27-time defending champion Grove City College. Next up for the runners is the NCAA Division III Mideast Regionals Saturday, Nov. 12.
Football – Tyler Perone:

The Waynesburg offense showed some life in a 50-42 loss at Thiel Saturday. The 42 points scored were a season high for Waynesburg.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Tyler Perone led the offense with his arm. The freshman quarterback threw for 401 yards on the day. This was a season high and the first 400-yard passing game for Waynesburg since Carter Hill’s 483-yard school record set in 2013.
Perone completed 26 of 51 passes, two of which passes went for scores, while two were picked off. The completions, attempts and yards totals are all career highs for Perone. The Jackets battle St. Vincent on the road Saturday, Nov. 5. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
