Half Your Brain

Sep 2, 2014
2 min read

Many years ago my oldest son came home from elementary school. We asked him what he learned that day. He replied that he learned in science that the brain was divided into two hemispheres. He went on to tell us that the left side had to do with logic, math, science and reasoning. I then asked what about the right brain.

He got a look on his face and said that the right brain was involved in creativity, feelings, poetry and other stuff. He then said, “I can’t believe half of your brain is wasted like that!”. He is now studying to be an engineer…

The soy and the lemon give it a great flavor.

On both sides of the steak, make the cross-hatch pattern. This allows the flavor to get deep.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 1-1/2-pound beef flank steak or boneless beef top sirloin steak

  • 1 teaspoon finely shredded lemon peel

  • 1/2 cup lemon juice

  • 2 tablespoons sugar

  • 2 tablespoons reduced-sodium soy sauce

  • 2 teaspoons snipped fresh oregano or 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano, crushed

  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper

  • Lemon slices (optional)

  • Fresh oregano leaves (optional)

DIRECTIONS

1. Trim fat from meat. Score meat on both sides by making shallow cuts at 1-inch intervals in a diamond pattern. Place meat in a resealable plastic bag set in a shallow dish. For marinade, combine the lemon peel, lemon juice, sugar, soy sauce, oregano, and pepper. Pour over meat; close bag. Marinate in the refrigerator for 2 to 24 hours. Drain meat, reserving marinade.

2. Preheat broiler. Place meat on the unheated rack of a broiler pan. Broil 4 to 5 inches from the heat for 15 to 18 minutes for medium (160 degree F), turning and brushing once with marinade halfway through broiling. Discard any remaining marinade.

3. To serve, thinly slice meat diagonally across the grain. If desired, garnish with lemon slices and fresh oregano leaves. Makes 6 servings.
