Goodbye Uncle Bob
This past week I attended the funeral of my uncle, Bob LeFave. He was my favourite uncle, and his wife–my mother’s sister, Elaine–had always been my favourite aunt. Our families spent a lot of time together when I was little. And when I reached the age of 11 or 12, I even got to spend a lot of time with them on my own. The memories we created together are rich and wonderful.
It was time for me to go and Aunt Elaine said she would leave us so I could say goodbye. I gently hugged him. Twice. I told him how much I loved him and shared a couple of memories. Halfway through (and just after the second hug) he turned his head and looked directly at me. His eyes were half open, but there was no doubting they were looking directly into mine. He held that gaze until I left. I will never forget that look. He was telling me he loved me. So I said that back to him again.
Uncle Bob, I’m missing you terribly now, and I always will. Our moments fishing on the wharf, watching a movie, laughing, or having one of Aunt Elaine’s delicious meals, will be cherished in my heart til the day I die and become reunited with you.
And as for our movie of the week, is the clear winner. However, if it was mine to choose, it would be . Though I do remember laughing harder at that movie than most any I’ve seen in my life, that is not the reason. The reason is that out of the three nominees, it is the one I can remember most clearly watching with my Aunt and Uncle.

Two summers of my “coming of age” years I traveled to Nova Scotia to spend 2 weeks at my aunt and uncle’s house. I felt so proud because I went by myself, just as my sister had. During those times, I did like to watch movies in their TV room. While writing this, I could come up with at least 10 that I’d seen in that time, and I ranked them below:
Mickey + Maude (1984)
Kramer vs Kramer (1979)
The Incredible Shrinking Woman (1981)
The Champ (1979)
Heaven Can Wait (1978)
This is Spinal Tap (1984)
The Jerk (1979)
All of Me (1984)
Airplane! (1980)
History of the World: Part I (1981)
