God’s Creation Is Abundant
“Day unto day utters speech, and night unto night reveals knowledge.” (Ps 19:2)
This verse comes in the section of Psalm 19 when the psalmist is talking about natural revelation – God’s creation.
All vs. 2 is saying is this: every “day…and night” natural revelation is available. It is continuous and abundant. There are no “silent years” for God’s natural revelation.
The hymn writer Joseph Addison wrote a song based upon Psalm 19 and he penned, “What though in solemn silence all move around this dark terrestrial ball? What though no real voice nor sound amidst their radiant orbs be found? In reason’s ear they all rejoice, and utter forth a glorious voice; forever singing, as they shine, the hand that made us is divine.”
Now, we read that natural revelation “utters” (NKJV) or “pours out” (ESV). The Hebrew word means “to gush forth.” His natural revelation is everywhere; it is abundant. Evidence is everywhere (e.g., stars, the human body, flower petals, blades of grass, snowflakes, the atom, nature of light, gravity, 2nd law of thermodynamics, relativity, etc.).
This is why a hush falls upon you every time you get a glimpse of the vast amount of stars in a night sky.
This is why you get this sense of overwhelming awe when you see the endless horizon of the ocean.
This is why you feel small, insignificant, and frail when you see a powerful thunderstorm or the Grand Canyon. There is something of the voice of God which gets through to us on these occasions.
Consider these helpful summarizing words from John Calvin in his commentary on Psalm 19. He writes, “First, no day passes in which God does not show some signal evidence of his power. Secondly, every succeeding day contributes something new in proof of the existence and perfections of God. Thirdly, the days and nights talk together, and reason concerning the glory of the Creator.”
Natural revelation is abundant and continuous.
