Field Hockey Position: Midfield

High School Accolades: Herlocher has racked up in her her high school career four District 6 championships, four District 3 quarterfinal appearances, a first-team and a second-team Mid-Penn selection, a second-team all-state selection, a Mid-Penn Commonwealth Championship, a selection to the Pennsylvania Academic All-American team, and she serves a team captain for the State College Little Lions field hockey program.

Commitment: To play collegiate field hockey for the University of Massachusetts Lowell. The UMass Lowell River Hawks compete at the NCAA Division level as members of America East. The institution is home to over 17,000 students and are part of the University of Massachusetts system. The school is classified as a public, research institution and is located in Lowell, Massachusetts.

Why She Chose UMass Lowell: “Throughout my college search, I always felt like I was visiting a place and not a home. I have many conflicting interests, so I never had a clear idea of what I was looking for in a program or a school until I visited UMass Lowell. Aside from loving the place, I saw coaches that fight for their players and a team of exciting, hardworking, and strong women. I wanted to go to a place that was growing and had something to prove. I couldn’t be happier or more excited about my decision.”

Intended Major: Business

Club Field Hockey Experience: Herlocher plays for her mother and Julie Martelli at Blue Stripe Lacrosse.

Favorite Athletic Memories: “My all time favorite memory was on my senior night. We had previously lost to Mechanicsburg 5-2 earlier in the season. We chose our second game against them to be on our senior night. It was a special night for all the seniors and it pushed us all to a 1-0 win. It was a really cool experience to have everyone working together and overcoming the former loss on such an important night for myself and the fellow seniors I’ve played with since I was a little kid.”

Family Ties In Collegiate Athletics: Her mother, Sharon, played field hockey at Penn State University; her father, Neil, played rugby at Boston University, her sister, Phebe, plays field hockey at Drexel University, and her brother, Charlie, plays lacrosse at Rhodes College.

Her Support System: “My biggest influences are my mom, Coach Sharon Herlocher and Coach Chelle Tambroni. They have both always pushed me to be the best I can be in every aspect of my life. I could not be more grateful to have been coached by them. I’d also like to mention Char Morett-Curtis and Linda Krieser for their influence on my early years developing a love for the game. Along with my coaches Julie Martelli, Tara Hoenshelt, Lori O’donnell, and Beth Shaha. Most importantly my family, my sister Phoebe is a great role model and someone I look up to. My dad, Neil, is a true field hockey dad, he is never a sympathetic ear, but always someone to talk to. He and my brother, Charlie, have been supportive of me in all my endeavors. All these people are the reason I love my sport the way I do and have an appreciation for the different aspects field hockey brings to my life.”

Academic Excellence: In addition to being a Pennsylvania All-American in her junior season, Herlocher is also an International Baccalaureate(IB) Diploma Programme student. The programme provides an internationally accepted qualification for entry into higher education and is recognized by many universities worldwide.
