Name: Maddy Shomo

Hometown: State College, Pennsylvania

High School: State College Area High School

Sport: Field Hockey

Position: Forward

College: Slippery Rock University. The Rock is an NCAA Division II member who is part of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). The institution is home to around 8,400 students and is located in Butler County.

Why She Chose Slippery Rock: “I chose Slippery Rock University because of the balance between athletics and academics. The Rock has a great exercise science program in addition to a pre-physical therapy track. I love the dynamics of the athletic community here at Slippery Rock and how everyone supports each other.”

What State College Field Hockey Means To Her: “State College Field Hockey means so much to me. The coaches have helped me grow tremendously as a player and the team atmosphere prepared me for college athletics. I would not be the player I am today without my high school team. I love coming home in the summer and going to the high school “open plays” for current high school field hockey players and State College Field Hockey alumni.

Club Field Hockey Experience: “I started my club experience with the State College Blue Lions. I then moved on to play at Blue Stripe and PA United. Playing club at Blue Stripe and PA United were both a great experience that overall prepared me for collegiate field hockey.”

High School Accolades: Four-time letter winner in field hockey, two-time letter winner in track and field, four-time District 6 champion in field hockey, Mid-Penn Commonwealth Division title, PennLive All-Star Team selection, Mid-Penn All-Star Team selection, National Technical Honors Society inductee, National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) National Academic Squad honoree, Scholar of Distinction Award winner, and honor roll student

College Accolades: Appeared in 17 career games, made 12 career starts, recorded two goals in her first collegiate season, and was named a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Scholar-Athlete

Major and Future Plans: Exercise science on the accelerated pre-physical therapy track (3+3). This means she has three years of undergraduate study paired with three years of graduate school learning. It will allow her to earn her Doctorate of Physical Therapy (DPT) in six years instead of a conventional seven.

Favorite High School Field Hockey Memory: Winning the Mid-Penn Commonwealth Conference in her senior season

Favorite College Field Hockey Memory: Scoring the lone two goals in a 2-0 win against Mercyhurst University in the 2023 season.

Her Support System: “My previous coaches Chelle Tambroni, Sharon Herlocher, Lori O’Donnell, and Bri Price as well as my current coaches Rayell Wallace and Missy Revesz have shaped me into the field hockey player I am today. In addition to these coaches, I’m also very thankful for my family’s support. My dad, Jeffrey Shomo, my mom Rosanne Shomo, and my sister, Camryn Shomo have supported me through everything in my life and my athletic career. My family has been there to support me at all of my games. My dad even started taking pictures at my field hockey games in middle school. Since then, he has been big in sports photography, also taking pictures at all my college games. In addition, he takes pictures for local schools in and around State College, at Penn State sporting events, and other athletic events.”
