Get Them While You Can: December Items at Costco
Costco frequently changes inventory (It’s Gone? Discontinued Products) Sometimes there is “notice” that the item will no longer be sold (Price endings are not random). Other items are seasonal (Navigating Seasonal Items at Costco).. When members know which items are available for which times of year, they can plan ahead. Therefore, I wanted to share this list of items that will be only be available in December.
1. Pecan Pie
One limited bakery item is the Pecan Pie. The dessert consists of a thick filling in a crust and then topped with candied nuts.
Just as I have never had pumpkin pie, I have never had pecan pie. Although I do like pie (especially apple, blueberry, and Toll House Cookie), I am not interested in pecan pie. It sounds like it is extremely sweet and the filling sounds and looks “goopy.” I also don’t much like nuts in desserts. However, I know that many people rave about pecan pie. I am surprised that, given the frequency with which it is served on Thanksgiving, it is only available in December, after the holiday passes. Perhaps to give pumpkin pie its “moment” and then pecan pie can be the star for the winter holidays?
2. Häagen-Dazs Peppermint Bark Ice Cream Bars
These bars, sold in boxes of 15 individually wrapped bars, are highly recommended. The vanilla ice cream is coated with a chocolate shell that contains pieces of peppermint.
As I have written multiple times, I don’t eat many ice cream novelties. However, these bars do sound very good, given how much I love mint chocolate chip ice cream. I don’t plan on buying them but I see the appeal.
3. Kirkland Green Bean Casserole
A new, limited item for December is this ready-to-bake casserole. The convenient side dish is sold with the bean mixture in a tray and the crispy onions on the side to be added later.
I have never had green bean casserole and don’t plan to ever try it. However, I know it is very popular. I am a little surprised by the item for a few reasons. First, because I associate it with Thanksgiving, I am surprised that it is sold after, rather than for, Thanksgiving. Second, I know many people like convenience foods and that it can definitely help to have some sides prepared when doing a lot of cooking. However, this casserole seems like one of the easier side dishes to make by just mixing a few ingredients, baking, and then adding the topping at the end.
4. Bark-Thins Dark Chocolate & Shortbread Caramel
These treats are only available in the Northeast and Southwest. They consist of shortbread, surrounded by caramel and dark chocolate.
I have never seen or heard of this item but it sounds so good and I want to see if my Costco sells them. I have had the dark chocolate and almond Bark Thins and liked them very much. The quality is good and the taste was great. One limitation of them is that it can be hard to eat a lot of pure candy but sometimes I want a larger, more filling dessert. This variety seems to fit that because it is more of a cookie than a candy. I already know the dark chocolate is good quality. I really enjoy shortbread because it is not overly sweet but had a buttery flavor. I think it would pair very well with caramel and chocolate. If I see these, I would like to buy them. My only concern is liking an item that is time limited because maybe ignorance about limited items being good is bliss?
5. La Terra Fina Cranberry & Jalapeno Dip & Spread
This dip, that can be eaten either warm or cold, is praised for its sweet and spicy flavor.
Even if kosher, I would not be interested in this dip. I don’t like either flavor too much (except that I do like cranberry juice and cranberry sauce). However, it sounds like many like this dip. The light pink coloring from the cranberry also makes it look festive for parties. It would look nice on a platter with crackers and vegetables.
6. Casual Living Holiday Throw Blankets
These blankets come in three sizes and have a few different designs. They are 100% polyester and can go in the washing machine
I love blankets because I really like being warm and feeling cozy. I generally don’t love throw blankets because I like larger blankets. I am also not inclined to buy designs that are associated with holidays I don’t celebrate. However, these seem like a good purchase for many.
7. 32 Degrees Ladies Plush Jackets
Another item only available in December is these jackets that are sold in four colors. They have a zipper and two front pockets and are described as being very soft.
Given how much I like being warm and cozy whether through clothing or blankets, these sound great for me. I also really like full zippers because they are easier for putting on and off. I am interested in looking at these as they can be worn over clothes inside without too much underneath.
8. Khombu Winter Boots
These boots are highly recommended to buy this month for the quality and the price
Living in Boston and not owning a car, a quality pair of boots is essential. From what I could see online, this version is not the warmest of the brand so I will pass on them. I need one pair of good boots and I prefer the ones with a thick lining. If I were likely to make use of multiple pairs, I’d consider them.
9. 32 Degrees Ladies Winter Tech Jacket
Another limited item for December is this winter jacket. The jackets have hoods, a fitted shape, and come in four colors.
I definitely want to check out these jackets. Although they are likely not the warmest, I often prefer slightly lighter weight jackets when not spending much time inside because they are easier to move around in. They can also be worn over other sweaters without feeling really bulky. I always want a hood for snow or rain or just added warmth. It would not be my only winter coat due to not being heavy enough for the really cold weather. However, for the price it’s a good item for the wardrobe.
10. Mondetta Ladies Fleece Full Zip And Joggers
Another clothing item available in December is this set of the zipped top and joggers. They are sold in multiple colors. Tops and bottoms are sold separately, enabling members to buy each part to fit their preferred size.
I am not interested in these sets but do appreciate that people can buy different sizes for tops and bottoms. I certainly understand when items are sold together but there are times when I’d prefer to have different sizes for the top vs bottom or two different sized shoes.
11. Sherpa Button-Down Jackets
Yet another item of clothing sold in December to keep people warm is this jacket. It comes in a variety of three colors.
A family member actually bought one of these for me, knowing how much I like fuzzy, warm clothing. It is definitely soft and I like that it feels like it will be warm but not too heavy because I want to feel like I can move my arms! I also like that it buttons all the way down rather than being a pullover because that makes it easier to put on and take off.
12. Modern Deer Set
The final item on the list is a holiday decoration that can add to holiday displays.
Not for me but I know people like to decorate their houses and many people go “all out.”
Will you be buying any of these items in December?
