Friday, Sept. 20 Match Day!

Sep 19, 2019

Updates:  Heard that St. Thomas couldn’t get out of Houston so the SCAC matches at JWU may change today. Positive thoughts to the team and everyone in Houston.

Neither 1 pm match is working on either video or stats. Sigh.

Both videos are now working. Live Stats are not for me. It appeared Schreiner took at least one set from Southwestern. Both matches are still playing. No Margo Spaethling for Colorado College as far as I can tell.

Looks like Colorado College swept Dallas. I saw Spaethling who is not playing and the finger still looks bad (in splint). I assume this means the Southwestern/Schreiner match is 1-1 with Southwestern leading in the third.

Southwestern takes the third set 21-14 although I have to admit I was distracted a little with the Colorado College match. Still, I’m pretty sure that score is correct. Of course, Live Stats would help!!!!!

In case you need scores as Live Stats is sketchy or maybe they are not doing them now.

Austin College takes set 1 from Trinity.

Southwestern with the 4-set win. I had the last set 23-16. I’m getting better.

Meanwhile, Austin College is giving Trinity all it can handle. Trinity does pull ahead late and takes set two. Tied 1-1. Trinity takes the third set big. Lead 2-1. And the win 3-1.

Back at it. No big surprises this afternoon in the SCAC matches. UCSC couldn’t win today as they see their Pool B chances decrease. Belhaven beat Louisiana College in 5-sets away so that’s a pretty nice win for them.

The 9 pm matches have some interesting stories going. Caltech is shocking Whittier right now up 2-0. This is Caltech’s first DIII match and I thought they would be a lot better this year. Certainly a statement win if they can pull it off. This would be their second conference win in their history.

La Verne is up 2-0 on Occidental. CMS is struggling with Redlands but are up 2-0 and have now opened a huge lead in set 3. Pacific is heading for a sweep over George Fox. In the huge NWC match, PLU and Whitworth are tied 1-1. Lewis & Clark is up 2-0 on Willamette as is Puget Sound on Whitman. Pomona-Pitzer pulls out the second set to tie things up with Cal Lu 1-1 in a pretty big SCIAC match.

Noticed on Twitter that St. Thomas has suffered some delays getting out of Houston today. I believe they are in the air now. Long day and they couldn’t even play.

Mills College gets their first win tonight.

Seeing all the fans going in the non-A/C gyms in SoCal makes me chuckle a bit. I think La Verne/Oxy was played in a water park due to the sweat.

Update – Pacific, CMS, Puget Sound and La Verne all get the sweep. Lewis & Clark about to get their sweep. Whittier wins big in set 3 but still trail 2-1. Whitworth looking to force a 5th set as they are done 2-1 but up in set four. Cal Lu just made a nice comeback to get things close in set three with Pomona-Pitzer. Tied 1-1 there.

For some reason the PLU commentary is not matching up with the Cal Lu/Pomona-Pitzer match. I’ve got three matches streaming right now.

Pomona-Pitzer up 2-1 on Cal Lu. Freshman Naomi Chen-Mallouk is on fire right now.

So, in one of the matches I watched today, the fans chanted “Defense” while the other team served and continued it through the early part of the rally. So, they basically were cheering for both teams during the rally. Strange.

Whitworth/PLU going to a 5th set. This is a big one in the NWC. Especially for PLU.

Caltech is undefeated in DIII play this year (1-0) and are the current leaders in the SCIAC (1-0). They beat Whittier in 4-sets.

Whitworth wins in 5-sets at PLU. Emiko Kahler is gunning for All-Region with 18 kills.

Only match left is Cal Lu/Pomona-Pitzer as they start the fifth set.

No such thing as a double anymore as far as I can tell. Texas, NW and SoCal all agree today. Not sure it’s a bad thing but hard to get use to.

Missed touch call on match point and Pomona-Pitzer can’t close it out after being up 14-11 in set 5. Lose 16-14. That was a tough one for the Sagehens.

That’s it for me. Nationally, Eau Claire got swept by Cornell. Oshkosh beat St. Thomas in 5-sets. Hope and Augsburg struggled but both won in 5-sets. Birmingham-Southern upset #3 Berry in 5-sets. #23 Clarkson lost twice tonight.

Random Thoughts:  Conference matches all around except for the ACAA. Speaking of the ACAA, I’m unsure as of this writing when the Mills College matches will be today and tomorrow. I put them last on the list just as a placeholder. Santa Cruz is at the Arcadia Tournament. All important matches for them as they try to get the only Pool B bid. (Update – Mills posted their match today is at 7 p.m. central.)

The SCAC starts us off today with pods playing at Centenary and JWU (Denver). None of the big three play each other today but lots of opportunity for everyone to get off to good starts.

The ASC has three matches on the schedule. Concordia/HSU is a big match in the West Division as there are at least four teams that should play in the conference tournament but only three get the chance. UMHB plays at McMurry and it’s the best chance for the War Hawks to win a signature game and get in the discussion of an at-large bid. Belhaven/Louisiana College is also important as these two teams want to get into the top 3 in their division so winning this match is a great first step.

In the NWC we have an interesting start of the year with Whitworth playing Pacific Lutheran and then Puget Sound tomorrow. I see four teams with a chance in this conference and Whitworth has away matches with two of them. Winning both puts them in the driver’s seat for the NWC title. Pacific at George Fox should be interesting. I’m unsure how good Pacific really is and this will give us an indication.

Over in the SCIAC, the big match today is Cal Lutheran at Pomona-Pitzer. These are two teams in the running for the 4 SCIAC tournament spots and an at-large bid. Too early for a must win but certainly a need win.

No road trip for me this weekend so hopefully I’ll get to see some of the streams.
