Friday, Sept. 13 Match Day!
Updates: If you read below, you’ll see I said I would be at the Trinity match if my travel cooperated…and, it didn’t. The flight I wanted in the morning filled up so I scrambled to pack a bag and got on a Thursday night flight. Uber willing, I should be there. Go Tigers!
Juniata fights off about 100 set points for the first set win 29-27. Two missed calls would have given set to TU.
TU takes set two 25-22. Is Live Stats only not working for me? Annoying. Juniata’s defense is a joy to watch. Dejia Danhi in the middle is a blocking force.
Heck of a match. TU once again has 4 set points and hit out on 24-23 but a touch call gives them the set. Lead 2-1.
Trinity with the win 25-18. Win in 4-sets. TU had too much firepower.
CMS way too much in set one. 25-18 over #1 Emory.
Ugly second set until the end. Emory has two set points and a kill that the CMS libero digs incredibly. Go on to win 26-24. Up 2-0 on #1 Emory.
CMS with the sweep. #1 Emory has their first defeat in a long time.
BSU in a close one first set over Whitworth. Puget Sound getting beat by UC Santa Cruz. Not a good look
I heard Cal Lutheran was streaky and I just saw it. Take set two 25-19. Trinity’s turn not to play well.
Whitworth and Puget Sound both turn it around and lead 2-1.
I guess there is a good and bad Cal Lu? I’ve seen both teams. Bad Cal Lu shows up for the third set. Trinity wins 25-12. Regals are sooooo streaky.
EMIKO KOHLER! 25 kills to lead Whitworth over BSU. Another nice win for the West.
Puget Sound and UCSC going to a fifth.
Trinity finishes off Cal Lutheran in one of the weirdest matches I’ve ever seen. Cal Lu was just up and down. You can see the talent and you can see what they can become but they can also really struggle.
Puget Sound holds off UCSC in 5-sets. Another team that would be interesting to watch in person to check on their streakiness (is that a word?). Teams combined for 68 attack errors in the match.
Not seeing the Dallas score update anymore so I assume they won and they didn’t close out the Live Stats. Dallas was hitting 0.351.
Can’t get the Colorado College Live Stats working for me but it appears they are 1-1 with Transy.
Transy up 2-1. Is this the year Colorado College loses twice at home?
Watched the Emory sweep of Juniata and now I’m waiting on the CMS match against WUSTL. This is a big trap match for CMS. WUSTL may not be ranked but they are good enough to win here if CMS doesn’t bring the energy then did against Emory.
Colorado College forces a fifth set. Watched the last 10 points or so and the Transy coach didn’t disappoint. Coach Swan almost gets a yellow card. I think there is also a match being played.
Transy with their third upset in three weeks. They down Colorado College in 5-sets.
Meanwhile Whittier has forced a fifth set with Pacific Lutheran. Pac Lu wins it to avoid an upset. Great effort by the Poets.
Too many receiving mistakes. WUSTL takes set one over CMS. CMS takes set two. Tied late in the third.
CMS has three set points and finally converts 27-25. Up 2-1. WUSTL not going away easily.
CMS with the 4-set win. Good day for the West here. Food in my future. More updates later tonight.
Looks like Dallas has given a loss to the West Region’s last undefeated team. Dallas sweeps McMurry.
The La Verne sweep puts a monkey wrench into the works as a team that was struggling looks like they want to be a player in the region this season. The Leopards had a lot of turnover and could be figuring it out. Tough loss for the ranked Pacific Lutheran.
Pomona-Pitzer with a tough UCSC loss then bounce back to sweep Puget Sound. Not a great day for the NWC teams in SoCal.
Updated as best I can at 10:46 Central. Lewis & Clark and Austin College are still playing. Pios leading 2-1 over Austin College. Missing a Redlands score. It appears Caltech stopped playing midway through the first set. But, probably not.
Okay…Redlands my last game to find.

Random Thoughts: If my travel cooperates I should be arriving in St. Louis for the Trinity / Juniata match. I promise the Trinity parents that I’ll be 100% behind them and their team!
The next match at the East to West Battle will be #1 Emory against #3 CMS, which will be another fun one. I highly recommend everyone tune in to these first two matches if they can to see our best teams going against the nation’s best teams.
The third showdown between McMurry and Schreiner will be today. That’s three matches against the same team in three weeks! We’ll all have to wait until October for the fourth one.
Whitworth has a really tough challenge against Birmingham-Southern today and it could be one that influences NCAA selection if both are going for an at-large bid come November.
Trinity against Cal Lutheran is funny in that they had to go to St. Louis to play it.
Sul Ross State plays Concordia in an ASC match. Sul Ross State has started strong but I think Concordia should be at another level. Regardless, it’s a good test for them.
Linfield is out at the Eau Claire Tournament so lots of West Region love heading their way. Same for Redlands at the Swarthmore Tournament and Whitman at the DePauw Tournament.
Transylvania plays Colorado College and will try to upset a ranked team for the third week in a row. Both of these coaches can be animated on the sideline so that should be fun to watch, too. (Note, my observation on the Transy coach is based on watching parts of one set. My observation on Coach Swan is based on 6-years now.) 🙂
A chance for Whittier to upset Pacific Lutheran today. This would help them after a slow start to the year.
Another tough match for Whitworth as they get Transylvania. Pulling for the Bad Pirates.
Austin College heads to the Northwest to play a few teams up there. Gives the NWC and SCAC some interesting data points for future comparisons.
Colorado College’s turn against Birmingham-Southern. That really is a fun little group of four teams there. Curious to see which Tiger gets hurt in this one. (That was a joke! Get healthy…everyone!)
CMS can’t relax on WUSTL playing at their place today. This is really a must win regardless of how the Emory match went. This will be the first day of matches that WUSTL has played when not being ranked since ranking became a thing.
Curious to see how Pacific Lutheran and La Verne match-up. The Lutes should win twice today but both Whittier and La Verne should be getting better each match.
Puget Sound versus Pomona-Pitzer is another BIG regional match-up. Equally important to both squads.
As I said, I will be at WUSTL today if anyone from that part of the world wants to say hello. I normally wear a yellow Southwestern hat and I’m thinking no one else in the gym should be pulling for Southwestern when they are not actually there.
