Friday, November 10 Match Day

Update: Made it to Georgetown. Got to meet some PLU parents. Their girls look really strong set one. Trinity fighting back now.

Sorry, hungry. Pac Lu looked great. I feel sad for a number of the Trinity seniors having watched them for 4 years now. Service was the difference in this one. (The Pac Lu parents said no one says “Pac Lu” so I need to copyright it, I guess.)

New Rochelle was a little better than I thought. Good defensively but just don’t have the height or firepower to compete against Colorado College. Shout out to the Tiger parents that said “hi”. I’m a little worried because the only parents talking to me are from the winning teams and the Southwestern parents got smart years ago and stopped talking to me. I will be avoiding all Whittier fans for the next few hours!

Carnegie Mellon avoid a somewhat stunning upset by beating Easter in 5 sets. Calvin looks good early. Berry is trying to take the hardest path through the tournament as they dropped the first two sets but have forced a 5th set against Covenant. Keep rowing, Berry, as they pull out the match.

CMS was impressive and UTD pulled out every trick in the book, but couldn’t pull it out. Now for Whittier and Southwestern.

A little down time after the Southwestern victory but updating now. Whittier was the most surprising team in the West Region this year and frankly maybe in the nation. You could see why in set 2 and 4 but Southwestern had a huge home court advantage and that helped.

Thoughts: Back at it folks. I’ll be traveling down to Southwestern in the morning and hope to catch as much of the first match as I can. I’ll do my best to update as the day goes on but you can always click on the regional links.

I really didn’t put a prediction page together but I did get all of the matches correct from yesterday. I even had the sets right and the scores. Not sure I’ll be able to repeat that today. As a general rule I like #1 seeds playing at home (Northwestern, Emory, Clarkson and Johnson & Wales). In the other four regions I like IWU, Wittenberg, Carnegie Mellon and Southwestern. (Yes, homer pick. Kill me!)

I actually like CMS the best with the way they are playing right now. They bombed out of the tournament last year and they will be ready out of the chute today. Southwestern plays a really late match against a California team so I don’t like that at all. Advantage Poets. Whittier hasn’t played in a week and this (NCAA Tournament) will be new to them. Advantage Pirates. Home crowd pushes them over the edge. My mind takes CMS against Southwestern but the heart wins. Colorado College struggled (for them) in the SCAC tournament matches. I think Trinity will get by Pac Lutheran based on their experience and I’ll take the Tigers in that semi-final. (Anyone get that?) Pirates beat the Tigers in the regional final. There! I’m on record. Watch the Poets sweep now. Seriously, Colorado College has figured it out all year and this probably is a CMS / Colorado College final. The one thing I’ll say is that last year, every host team made the regional final.
