Happy World Photography Day!

This is not a photography blog by any means, but there have been a few occasions when our worlds have collided, so we link you to some notable photographers we have written about in the past (excepting the early cinematic pioneers I’ve profiled who started as still photographers, which would prove a kind of detour).

Linda McCartney (pending)

In all likelihood I’ll do something on spiritphotography at some point, and I’m also very interested in W.S. “Dad” Lively (1855-1944), who operated a studio in McMinnville, Tennessee starting in the 1870s and founded the pioneering Southern School of Photography in 1904. Several of my ancestors and relatives lived in McMinnville and environs, and to my shock and initial disbelief, one of my great-grandfathers gave “photographer” as his occupation as early as 1870, though he later went on to do other things, so that’s a topic I intend to explore.

Shout out too to photographer friends I have written about and/or whose work you’ll find throughout this blog, including Jim Moore, Evan Fairbanks, Norman Blake, Joe Silva, Jonathan Smith, and the late Ken Stein.

May your light always be good, and may your pictures always come out!
