For World Burlesque Day: A Finding Aid to Burlesque on Travalanche
April 26 is World Burlesque Day!
Travalanche has hundreds of burlesque-related posts, but I’ll have to cop to the fact that it is handily the most cockamamie subject category on this blog in terms of navigation. The main original content trunk here was vaudeville, which was quite a different form from burlesque, but there is and was overlap, and so gradually burlesque related content began to accrue here on a catch-as-catch can basis. There’s that, and there’s also the fact that the burlesque industry and burlesque dancing are not synonymous. So two categories evolved:
One, located under “Variety Theatre“, headed “Burlesque” incorporates some of the top burlesque dancers, but also burlesque comedians and producers, as well as other related stuff, like reviews of burlesque books, shows, and documentaries. It also used to feature lots more about contemporary burlesque, but that content stream wasn’t very much trafficked, and was often time sensitive and quickly dated, so I’ve removed most of it.
The other category I have goes by the unwieldy named of “Art Models/ Bathing Beauties/ Beauty Queens/ Burlesque Dancers/ Chorines/ Pin-Ups/ Sexpots/ Vamps”, and this is because so much that one associates with burlesque (sexy naked ladies) is merely burlesque-adjacent, and falls outside of the burlesque business as a topic per se.
This reality combined with the fact that all the content streams here evolve by happenstance, and are organized by the order in which they are posted, makes it undoubtedly a challenge to navigate unless you know precisely what you are looking for. So today, I proffer this post, with some key articles laid out more logically and with more focus to make it easier to to, um, wrap your arms around. I hope you find it helpful
