For International Jazz Day: A Jazz Finding Aid for Travalanche

April 30 is International Jazz Day!

Travalanche has hundreds of posts celebrating jazz singers, composers, and musicians, but they are not grouped into a single section. Rather, the various styles each have a section under “music“, along with other styles, such as classical and folk music, and they are listed there alphabetically. So for quick reference, I thought I would do this quick little outline that organizes the relevant sections in a more comprehensible (roughly chronological) order. I hope it is useful to you! For those new to the site, we rarely do music criticism per se, our orientation is theatre and media, so most of our writing on the topic usually has more to do with how musicians intersect with those arts.

The sections are:

Ragtime

Dixieland/ Early Jazz/ Hot Jazz

Blues

Tin Pan Alley

Ballroom/ Big Band/ Swing

Be Bop

Rock and Pop

There’s no section for European Jazz, but we did do one on Django Reinhardt
