The 2025 MILB Rookie-Level All-Stars were announced. Included on the list is a Pittsburgh Pirates top 30 prospect.
Edward Florentino was named the FCL top MLB prospect this season. He spent just 29 games at the level this season but hit six home runs during that time with a .347 batting average. He was then promoted to Bradenton where in 50 games he is hitting .272 with 10 home runs and 35 RBI. He is ranked as the number five prospect on the Pirates top 30 list.
It’s an impressive honor to be called the best prospect in the league. However, why didn’t Florentino also make the league all-star team? It seems like a snub to be like oh you’re the top MLB prospect, and you got promoted out of the league, but you’re not an all-star? Maybe it was because of the promotion that he didn’t make the all-star team, but to me it doesn’t seem like he should be left off the team if he is that good and had success, even for a brief time at the level.
The Pirates did have a league all-star in the DSL though. Pitcher Yonleg Gaetano of the DSL Pirates Gold was named to the DSL All-Star team. Gaetano pitched in 13 games, making three starts. He went 2-2 with a 0.93 ERA. He also converted five of seven in save opportunities this season. He isn’t currently ranked in the top 30 in the Pirates system.
Overall, it’s good to see a couple of lower-level prospects shine as all-stars and awards winners in the DSL and FCL. Keep an eye on them as they try and make their way to Pittsburgh.
