Fishbone is an American band from Los Angeles, formed in 1979, that became known in the 1980s and 1990s for its energetic, eclectic, and politically charged music. They mix a wide range of styles—ska, punk, funk, reggae, hard rock, and soul—often in the same song, which made them pioneers of alternative rock and ska-punk before those terms became mainstream.
The band was founded by African American teenagers who grew up together in South Central L.A., led by vocalist/saxophonist Angelo Moore (also known as “Dr. Madd Vibe”). Their lineup has changed over the years, but Moore has remained the charismatic center, known for wild stage antics and theatrical performances. Fishbone’s debut EP Fishbone (1985) and albums like In Your Face (1986) and Truth and Soul (1988) gained them a devoted following. Their 1991 record The Reality of My Surroundings is often considered their masterpiece, blending furious social commentary with manic, genre-bending energy.
