Director: Miguel Sapochnik
Starring: Tom Hanks
On a post-apocalyptic Earth, a robot, built to protect the life of his creator’s beloved dog learns about life, love, friendship and what it means to be human.
‘Finch’ is a post-apocalyptic film that follows the adventures of a robotic engineer named Finch (Tom Hanks), who lives alone with his dog Goodyear (who is absolutely adorable) and a little robot called Dewey. Finch builds a humanoid robot, later named Jeff, whose main purpose is to protect Goodyear. Jeff is wonderfully voiced by Caleb Landry Jones. (There literally is only one human character in this movie).
With the ozone layer having been destroyed by a solar flair, Man is no longer able to walk in the sun, with temperatures of up to 66 °C (or 150 °F). In the face of an approaching superstorm that will last 40 days and destroy everything in its path, Finch, Goodyear, Dewey and Jeff set out on a cross-country journey to San Francisco (If I didn’t know better, I’d have thought this film was a clever tourism advertising campaign for San Francisco).
There are many hilarious moments, and Jeff steals every scene! Personally I believe the film should have been named after the robot and not the man. (The robot could instead have been named Finch, with Jeff being Tom Hanks’ character.) The film also boasts some impressive visuals, including a great twister scene. And I did not expect the movie to have such an emotional ending…
‘Finch’ was a wonderful surprise and I enjoyed every moment.
Would I watch it again? Yes, definitely.
