Family Memory (XXXI): Honeymoon in Canada

Wow…29 years ago this summer, I got married…married still…haven’t killed her and she hasn’t bludgeoned me to death either. We’ll call that a win-win.

We had a great honeymoon–driving from Illinois out through the Badlands, Montana, and into the Canadian Rockies, staying just outside Banff National Park in a cabin, going hiking, seeing mountains, taking a boat tour of a drown-proof lake (you freeze before you drown), and of course, Lake Moraine and Lake Louise.

These were places I visited as a child (pre-Calgary Olympics which changed everything up there) and we had a great time together. On the way back, we went through Yellowstone (after a massive fire–so what we really saw were miles on miles of burnt matchsticks) and the rest of the Great Plains states.

That’s not what got me thinking though. Nearly 30 years–and what sticks is that as far as I can tell, we’re STILL the only people who headed north from the Midwest for a honeymoon rather than Florida, Mexico, or the Caribbean. NO one else I know has ever done a honeymoon in the mountains up north. Still weird.
