Excellence and Attention to Detail.
A small blog related to a post on Stoicism made by a man addicted to learning, Pete Wung. He noted that throughout history, successful individuals make a habit of studying past success in their field–and that this is documented as truth at least as far back as the Roman Empire. I’ve written about that with the Marine Corps officers I met last May.
But it isn’t just a military thing and learning should never be restricted to just your specific profession; there is
so much
that can be learned elsewhere! So how can we apply that to coaching?
Well, I wasn’t going to put this in a blog, but…since Pete posted that article not 12 hours after I sent this out as ‘homework’ to my players…it felt like destiny.
I gave my players some homework to do before we begin spring practice this weekend (yes, we are starting on Super Bowl Sunday…I’m a cruel, harsh taskmaster).
First, they needed to go to a link and watch a video. Here’s the link:
Then, they’ve been asked to read the following article about the event in the video, to think about the obsessive preparation and attention to detail. Success does not come without a crap-ton of work and focus. Note: My favorite part is the dinner at Prince’s with the executives.
The funny thing is–after all that, I ran into this story this morning as I caught up on my baseball news as spring training nears.
Not only did he talk to baseball people–all of whom happily shared thoughts with him…unlike many on the women’s side of the VB community–he went and spent time with Nick Saban and Alabama football. It’s a great read.
Prince, the Cubs, and the U.S. Marine Corps…not three things you associate with getting better as a volleyball coach or team. What do you have that you draw into the sport and your coaching and teaching? It can be anything you know or have a passion for. The beautiful thing is that not only will your coaching get better, you’ll take your coaching and apply it to your other passions and learn more about them as well!
