EREN KARAIBO – Ederlezi Avela (2024)
The song “Ederlezi” is a traditional folk song of the Romani people in the Balkans, popularized internationally by its inclusion in Emir Kusturica’s film Time of the Gypsies (1988), with music by Goran Bregović. The song is deeply rooted in Romani culture and celebrates the holiday of Đurđevdan (St. George’s Day), observed on May 6th in many parts of the Balkans.
The word Ederlezi derives from the Turkish term Hıdırellez, which is the name of a spring festival celebrated in various cultures of the Balkans and the Middle East. It marks the arrival of spring and is associated with renewal, nature, and hope. For the Romani people, Ederlezi is a significant cultural celebration, often involving music, dancing, and rituals.
