EK tops Fit Hits 4-1
While the EK senior leadership was away at Mixed Sectionals last weekend, we turned over the captain’s duties to Vinod Philip who did a great job leading our squad into battle on Saturday, June 18th at Fisher Park in Phoenixville, PA against the Fit Hits led by Marc Raiken.
When I say “led our squad” a literal translation would have helped because two of our players spent several minutes searching for the courts. I am happy to say that the Fit Hits did not enforce the lateness penalty. Lateness penalties are for pros in my opinion. NBC Sports was not filming us Saturday so I see no problems with the unintentional delay.
On to the match, at #1 singles Shawn Minnier (would the real Shawn please stand) showed us who we all know he is – the guy that beat Chris Kyper not that long ago when we really needed the victory. The guy who went undefeated in Delaware last year and the guy who won last Saturday 6-0, 6-1. Great playing Shawn!
At #2 singles, Dave”What song is it you wanna hear?” Freeburn lost to Peter Campagna. Peter hasn’t had the best year record wise but he certainly goes for his shots and the best I can figure is that he was on his game Saturday. He picked up the W for the Fits Hits 6-3, 6-4. Good going Peter.
At #1 doubles, Rob Laiacona and Joe Sassa took on Walt & Chris Lee. This is the father/son combo that Ed/I faced earlier in the year on a very windy day. We won 2&3 – great job Rob & Joe!
At #2 doubles, Rob “I’ll kick your butt in DE” Attman and Vinod Philip took on Peter Christis and Stephen Bailey. Rob is 9-0, mostly at #1 doubles, for his Delaware 4.0 team called “Alp.” Be careful Rob – you are going to wind up as a 4.5! Needless to say, Rob & Vinod make a very nice team and notched (another) solid win 6-4, 6-3.
At #3 doubles making his Easy Killer debut was Joe Dixon alongside 2nd year Easy Killer Justin Bussinger who was also playing for us for the first time this season. Joe & Justin did very well against Alan Oberman and Mark Matje. Mark hits a big ball so kudo’s to this impromptu pairing for winning 6-1, 6-2. We’ve been trying to get Joe involved all season – great to have your services Joe! Also, it’s wonderful to get Justin involved too – his busy schedule limits his tennis but he’s been hitting a great ball recently.
Up next we face Haverford on Saturday, June 26th in the friendly confines of Rustin High School at 9am. Also on Saturday is the Gulph Mills vs. Pirates match. The Pirates are looking like they might be the team to advance and they have ironed out their lineup and are starting to really notch up their level of play. There’s still much to be determined. Let’s keep working on being the best we can.
