Driver: San Francisco

I feel somewhat nostalgic recalling the original Driver, the vast city streets to roam, the ludicrously complicated missions to complete, and even though deep down I knew I was never going to hit the unsuspecting citizens with my vehicle, it didn’t deter me from endeavouring, but regrettably the sequels that consequently followed never quite captured the brilliance of the first. Driver 2 was instantly forgettable, granting you the possibility to wander the streets on foot to accomplish, well, not much really. Driver 3 was a poor mans GTA, with far inferior controls, story, graphics, shooting,…. and, well you get the idea. But now Driver is back and set in the car chase capital of America, San Francisco. Leading man Tanner also makes he’s return, but not as we know him?

Tanner is in a coma, which would leave you to believe that it’s already game over, well not quite. Although finding yourself in a coma would be considered a hinderance to any normal person, this isn’t the case for Tanner, because with the assistance of the Shift system that’s been implemented into DSF, Tanner can “Shift” his unconscious mind into the inhabitants that occupy San Francisco, affording him with the opportunity to commandeer vehicles to capture criminals and par take in the many city missions scattered throughout, all from the comfort of your own hospital bed (very convenient). Of course there is a justification for Tanners out-of-body overtime, as he’s driving expertise are required to help apprehend a notorious criminal known as Jericho, who has escaped from prison to cause unspeakably bad and nefarious deeds (shudder). Its clear then that Diver: San Francisco isn’t taking itself too seriously, which in hindsight is probably a good thing, but we’ll have to wait and see whether Tanners out-of-body experience wake the Driver series from its figurative coma.
