Dreams – 7/4

7/4/25 #1: There was a gunfight going on across a street and people weren’t permitted to cross the street. It seemed like it was Lincoln Way in Ames. Everyone was using various action-movie poses to fire handguns. 7/4/25 #2: I was on a hockey rink and the US had just beaten the Russians in a women’s hockey game. The women were all in powder-puff blue or foam green shorts. The arena itself was totally black. I kept thinking it was unfair that Russian had to play three games in one day–the US, Canada, and Germany, because I was counting and they only had twelve players total.

7/4/24: I was in my 6th grade class but it was crowded and the last day of school or a celebration. Teachers were sitting on metal chairs and they had a ‘chute’ set up for students to run through into an open area in the middle of the room blocked off with cardboard ‘walls’. Students were being asked to do interpretative dances and I didn’t know how to dance, so I asked to go to the bathroom. When I left the room, I was college-aged me and realized I may actually need to poop. I got to the bathroom and the stalls were full–one jad the former LLCC softball coach in it, using the space to hold a child with cerebral palsy/using it like a shower and sauna and there was lots of soap foam. I saw the other stalls were the same. He apologized and I said “It’s ok, plenty of stalls on campus.” I found one but didn’t use it and when I left, I was adult-me and I was walking through a gym with a basketball game–somehow I was in “Salem High School”. I tried to navigate using N/S/E/W but kept running into blocked passages. After I found a concessions stand setup in a hall, I followed a family but they found blocked doors but thought nothing of it. Eventually I found a window and saw I was far from my classroom–which was actually in the Iowa State Memorial Union. I blinked and I was outside–on the other side of the Union, but I couldn’t navigate to it. I got close but it was now night and there was slush on the ground. Billy Frison (a kid from grade school, a year older than me) threw an ice-ball at me, missed, and I said “Try it again, buddy, and I’ll put one at 82mph down your throat.” I went through a door, thought I was back, but I was standing at an ISU football practice field under the Friley arches and FINALLY was sure I could make it back, though I missed the entire class–I wasn’t worried because I told myself “I have had a most interesting adventure.” [woke me completely at 315am] **Added note, remembered an hour later: While in Salem HS, I tried to avoid the administrators there because I knew they hated me and were ‘on the lookout for me’

7/4/23 #1: I was just above the water in a swamp when I spotted a giant centipede moving through the water. It would stop and start and with each stop it got a little shorter. I realized it was a Japanese Army innovation–it was an armored transport and each of the pods it was dropping off was a camouflaged soldier preparing to attack. I didn’t do anything, just wondered where they got the idea.

7/4/23 #2: I was with my wife in a town with nothing but bars. She wanted to find a girl to kiss but we couldn’t enter any of the bars because the smoke was too thick to walk thru or breathe in. We wound up in an empty business that was nothing but vending machines and she went to get a Coke and when she got it, the machine said “Thank you, C3PO” and she freaked out wondering how it knew her nickname. She said then that for her to find someone to kiss, she was going to go use the EIU “Online Portal” and suddenly I was on a yacht for an OSU VB reunion, but I didn’t recognize anyone, so I just sat and watched the boat crash through the waves.

7/4/22 #1: We were in college and decided to play Frisbee football. At the last second someone in a GB Packers shirt showed up and wound up on our team. That was Aaron Rodgers. The problem was that there was a crack down the middle of Clyde Williams Field leading all the way to the big steps and grand entrance of Friley Hall [obviously the ISU geography is messed up]. The frisbee was brown and I was struggling to pass it because we kept getting in our own ways and Rodgers had disappeared. I tried throwing it to Steve H., but he kept deflecting it was a white lattice-designed straw hat as he sat on a couch. Finally Dave P. reached in front of Steve, caught it, and was declared the winner.

7/4/22 #2: I was in the basement kids’ playroom at my mom’s house in Davenport except it was bright/well lit in the room. I was on a leather couch and there was a woman at a desk next to me going over current accounts because of my recent retirement from coaching. She said I was leaving $5,150 behind [5150 is a Van Halen album]. I asked “What about the check in front of you? Has that been deposited?” She said no–looked at the check and said “That’s another $280 and brings your total to $51,500.” I didn’t ask about her math because she seemed very happy and I was relieved to no longer be coaching.

7/4/21: We were at war with the French–no idea who ‘we’ were. We needed to attack their base, so I went with a bunch of other soldiers who were all dressed like they were in a Steven Segal movie and we stole a French 15-person Ford van. We took the van and drove onto the grounds of the French base. We were supposed to go to the garage and steal more French vehicles. I was riding shotgun and when we pulled up, the guy behind me would immediately try and open fire, even though our windows were shut and bulletproof so the bullet would ricochet around inside the van and hit somebody. That meant we had to retreat. So we would come back and repeat the effort the next day and the guys at the gate always let us in, but with each passing day, the guys at the French motorpool got wiser so that at the end of the dream, they were firing on us already as we approached and when we parked, were trying to move a dumptruck behind us so we couldn’t get out. The guy behind me still had to fire at the French and I finally told him “You’re an idiot.”

7/4/10: I went with friends to an adult entertainment venue. Paul E, Steve H, and Dave P were upset that they weren’t allowed to play Yu-gi-oh! because the tables weren’t big enough. Linda Cr. liked that the music was Liszt while Tami C thought the burgers were pretty good. I was bored, so I went and road the Metro around Walcott looking for a UPS dropoff spot.
