Down the TBR Hole | #1

Dec 8, 2018
4 min read

Down the TBR Hole was originally created by Lia @ Lost in a Story

Over the past year I’ve seen many of my friends join in with this meme but never felt to urge to myself. However, as the new year approaches, I’ve been spending reflecting on my reading and blogging for 2019 which led me to finally pay attention to the fact that I still have books from 2012 (when I first made my Goodreads) on my TBR shelf. As I want to actually tackle my backlist books in a more structured way next year I decided it would be a great time to actually join in with Down the TBR Hole to control that pesky, ever-growing TBR!

How it works:

  • Go to your goodreads to-read shelf.

  • Order on ascending date added.

  • Take the first 5 (or 10 books)

  • Read the synopses of the books

  • Decide: keep it or should it go?

Freeglader: The Edge Chronicles (Rook Trilogy #3) by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell

Added: July 23rd 2012

The Edge Chronicles is one of my all-time favourite series from when I was a child and I have been wanting to catch up with the rest of the series. I recently deleted all of the other books from the series from my TBR, keeping just the next book I need to read but… I think if I haven’t gotten around to reading it for over 6 years then I probably won’t?

Verdict: Go! ❌

the night circus

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

Added: July 28th 2012

There have been many times when I’ve come close to removing The Night Circus but I am so intrigued by it. It sounds like one of those books I just have to read and I’m interested in whether I’ll side those who love or hate it! I also own it on kindle so it would count towards reading one of my owned books!

Verdict: Keep! ✅ Deadline: March 2019

the snow child

The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey

Added: August 10th 2013

This is another one that I’ve always umm’ed and aah’ed over, especially as its similar to The Night Circus in that some people seem to love it and others really didn’t like it. I really like the sound of the wild Alaskan winter as a setting, and the fact that it sounds like both historical fiction and fantasy. As I own a physical copy of this I do want to try and read it!

Verdict: Keep! ✅ Deadline: March 2019

2312

2312 by Kim Stanley Robinson

Added: December 16th 2013

I’ve become so attached to having 2312 on my TBR as it’s been with me for such a long time but I honestly don’t think I’ll ever get around to this. Although the premise sounds interesting, it hasn’t received particularly good reviews, it’s almost 600 pages long, I don’t own a copy and don’t know anyone else who has read it so looks like it’s time to finally let go!

Verdict: Go! ❌

the boy who could see demons

The Boy Who Could See Demons by Carolyn Jess-Cooke

Added: July 31st 2014

I added this back in 2014 after my friend (who has incredible taste in books rated it 5 stars). A book about a little boy whose best friend is a 9000-year-old demon, and his psychiatrist who is caught between diagnosing him with schizophrenia or believing he can really see demons. In the last few years I’ve really stepped away from books about mental illness and I don’t think is one that I could read now.

Verdict: Go! ❌

norwegian wood

Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami

Added: August 23rd 2014

The fact this is still on my TBR bugs me so much because I actually read about 60-75% of the book and then put it down. Whyyyy past me?! Why did you do this to yourself?! I could have finished the book in 2014/2015 but nope, it’s still here and now I really don’t think I’ll ever return to it because its been too long?

Verdict: Go! ❌

hollow city

Added: August 23rd 2014

I adored the first installment of this series especially with all of its creepy historicalesque photographs but suffered from the curse of the series where I never end up reading past the 1st book haha (and also the film put me off even though I never actually watched it). I still want to read Hollow City as I love Ransom Riggs’ concept so I’ll be keeping this one.

Verdict: Keep! ✅ Deadline: May 2019

the handmaid's tale

The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood

Added: August 23rd 2014

This is one I feel so conflicted over as to whether to keep or get rid of it. As a feminist I feel like it’s one of those books that I really should read, but a friend of mine also said that the writing is very stream of consciousness and that’s my least favourite type of writing so I feel very stuck. Any advice is welcome!

Verdict: Keep for now ✅ Deadline: March 2019

station eleven

Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel

Added: December 14th 2014

Station Eleven is one of those ones I just need to hurry up and read. I’ve owned it on kindle for the past few years but keep finding excuses to not read it. I’ve waited so long at this point that part of me isn’t super interested in it anymore but I’m trying to read as many books that I own as possible. Another one to stay for now with a deadline!

Verdict: Keep! ✅ Deadline: March 2019

sand

Added: December 14th 2014

I remember part of the reason I added Sand was because of that stunning cover and the whole idea of an old world buried by sand waiting to be discovered by sand divers. The concept sounds so goodand I am super into my sci-fi at the moment. I want to give this one a little while longer because the concept does sound unique but if not it will be time to say goodbye!

Verdict: Keep ✅ Deadline: May 2019

Stats

Kept with deadline: 6/10 (60%) Discarded: 4/10 (40%)

So that’s it for my first ever Down the TBR Hole! It actually felt really good to systematically go through my TBR shelf and make some concrete decisions on these books. Hopefully the deadlines will keep me on track but if not you all might have to keep me accountable 😉

What do you think of my decisions? Are there any that you agree/disagree with?
