Don’t Waste Your Sports – Taunting

Is anyone else tired of players taunting each other after they make a so-called amazing play?

Professional athletes get paid to dunk basketballs and shoot hoops, score touchdowns and make tackles, catch fly balls and get base hits, etc. That is their job! They are paid to make a touchdown and it is up to them whether it is a diving catch or not. It is up to them whether they want to do a lay-up or have a thunderous dunk. It is up to them whether they want to strut around the bases after a home run or simply run around without any fanfare.

Gone are the days of Barry Sanders scoring a touchdown and just the ball to the referee as if what he just accomplished was no big deal.

In today’s sports arena, a player makes a tackle and he gets up to celebrate like he just won the lottery and he taunt the opposing player in a manner that shows disrespect and arrogance. It would seem like most professional athletes think they are God’s gift(s) to the sports kingdom.

It is nauseating!

Can you imagine Jesus coming out of the tomb, strutting down to the local court house and sticking His nose or tongue out at the Roman soldiers and taunting them because they failed in keeping Him in the tomb? He would never do such a thing because Jesus was humility.

Now, I am not saying athletes shouldn’t celebrate and high-five one another and even use language in a game to get in the head of an opposing players in hopes to gain an advantage. But enough of the disrespectful, arrogance, mean-spirited talk and celebration.

It is a waste of sports! it is a waste of sportsmanship.

I would love to watch my beloved Niners play on Sunday and just once see Ephesians 4:29 practiced by one of our linebackers when they hit a Seahawk player!

“Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.”
