Don’t Waste Your Sports – Michael Sam
It is becoming more and more popular to “come out of the closet.” The media loves to tell the story of athletes who were not openly homosexual but who now choose to tell the world they have chosen to be with members of the same sex.
The latest story comes from Michael Sam, a defensive end for the Missouri Tigers and soon to be NFL professional. He was the SEC’s co-defensive player of the year and is likely to become the NFL’s first openly gay player.
Sam is open and proud about his homosexuality and his coaching staff and The University of Missouri has applauded his decision to make this announcement.
But Mizzou is not the only one applauding Sam. In fact, if you spend just a few minutes on Google with the words “Michael Sam” you will find a plethora of applause for this announcement. The applause is thunderous. In fact, it seems with each new openly gay athlete, the applause gets louder and louder.
A former classmate of mine from The Master’s Seminary tweeted this morning about this announcement – “This Michael Sam celebration is Romans 1:32 played out before our eyes. Weeping and praying for repentance for this nation.”
He couldn’t be more right. Paul wrote, “Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them” (Rom 1:32).
If you don’t do this regularly, pray for our country. Pray for revival. Pray that God would continue to be merciful. This is not a day for celebrating Michael Sam, but for lamenting our own country’s celebration of sin.
