Don’t Waste Your Sports: Family and Football

Super Bowl XLVIII has come to an end with the Seattle Seahawks getting their 1st Super Bowl victory in their franchise’s history and the 2nd championship for the city in professional sports. The last was the 1979-1980 Seattle Super Sonics.

As a committed San Francisco 49er fan, I was in a dilemma this year in jumping on a bandwagon of one of the team’s to give them my support. I didn’t know if I should cheer for our divisional rival and join the entire side of Andrea’s family (the Seattle Seahawks) or cheer for one of my favorite football players (Peyton Manning) and his team (the Denver Broncos). After much consideration (about three seconds), I chose to cheer for the Denver Broncos.

I knew I would be in Seattle to watch the game and sitting in my in-laws’ living room, literally surrounded by Seahawks fans in their jerseys and T-shirts, but I decided to stick with my choice of cheering for the orange and blue.

If any of you are part of the minority of Americans who have no idea who won the game, the Broncos came in 2nd place!

One takeaway from this experience had nothing to do with the game and the Seahawks dominating defense. It had nothing to do with the incredibly tasty food the ladies made.

What I really enjoyed was being with family. In fact, the best of memories in life seem to almost always be with family. I am so glad to have godly parents and in-laws. I am glad to have people on both sides of the family that know Christ and long to serve Him.

So gathering to watch a football game is more than just causal fun for me. It is worshipping God with my family!

Maybe the best way to redeem sports is by enjoying the worship of our God when you view it. And when you are surrounded by a family that loves Christ, it is a preview of things to come in eternity. Can’t wait to see what heaven has in store!
