Don’t Waste Your Sports – Christians on the PGA

One of my great delights in the last year has been learning of more and more professing Christians on the PGA tour. As an avid golf fan and wannabe player, I certainly have players I genuinely root for and like to watch play (e.g., Greg Norman, Tiger, Lee Westwood).

Up until a year ago, the only professing Christians I knew about on the PGA or Champions Tours were Tom Lehman, Paul Azinger and Bernard Langher. But when Bubba Watson won The Masters last year – a professing Christian – other professing Christian golfers began to have great success and their faith took center stage. As of today, some of the professing Christians on the tour are Bubba Watson (#13 in the world), Webb Simpson (#19 in the world) and Rickie Fowler (#32 in the world) – just to name a few.

Watson Bubba

As a member of the Twitter community, I have enjoyed following Simpson and Watson in the past year and I am constantly encouraged by their God-centered tweets. For example, Bubba Watson (who has almost 827,000 followers) tweeted yesterday before the final round of the Honda Classic “Today’s Prayer: Lord, help me to be gracious and slow to anger, just like you! Amen!” On Friday, he tweeted “Today’s Prayer: I want to trust in only you Lord, not in things of this earth! Amen!”

Every time I read tweets like these, I pray that God would use men like this to reach athletes for Christ. It is such a blessing to see people like this not wasting their sports!
