Do We Really Believe in the Bible’s Sufficiency?
Psalm 119:63-64 states, “.”
God’s “” give us everything we need for life and godliness (II Pet 1:3). That is another way of saying “The Bible is sufficient.” The Bible is enough.
In today’s vernacular, when we say something is enough, we don’t mean it is “just okay.” The Bible’s sufficiency means it is completely, 100% satisfactory. There is nothing that needs to be said that hasn’t already been said when it comes to learning how to be godliness and life (II Pet 1:3).
And most Christians would say they believe in the Bible’s sufficiency. They would say the Bible is authoritative and gives us everything we truly need, but believing in the Bible’s sufficiency is easier said than practiced.
More often than not, we show our disbelief in the sufficiency of Scripture. Let me give you some examples.
We like to talk about the Bible’s sufficiency but we think it does not have enough practical persuasion to draw an unbeliever to Christ so we use cute stories or object illustrations or appeal to experience.
We like to talk about the Bible’s sufficiency but we think we can become godly people with a little consideration of our time each day to it and then filling our minds with meaningless entertainment or music or Facebook statuses.
We like to talk about the Bible’s sufficiency but when we really need help making decisions in life (e.g., when to have kids, going into debt, etc.) we consult magazine articles written by fallen human beings.
We like to talk about the Bible’s sufficiency but when we look for answers to the growing immorality in our nation, we think the passing of bills or laws or electing certain candidates is going to remedy the problem.
We like to talk about the Bible’s sufficiency but when we are given the option of fulfilling our desires, we look to a pornographic image or lust after another.
The Bible is sufficient no matter how we live, but we will demonstrate whether we believe it is sufficient by the way we live.
