DIII Legislation Results

The 2020 NCAA Convention was this past week where they voted on 11 proposals specific to DIII. You can find the proposals here.

With respect to volleyball, there wasn’t a lot that impacted our sport. There was a proposal that passed that will allow student-athletes serving as leaders on their teams to participate in leadership programming outside the playing season with any member of the coaching staff so long as athletic activity is not involved.

There were two proposals dealing with reducing the time for institutions to qualify for DIII membership that passed. This effectively means schools will have to wait a year less to become full DIII members. I assume this will directly impact JWU (Denver) and St. Thomas (TX) in the West Region.

Another proposal that passed will now allow schools to provide snacks and nutritional supplements incidental to athletics participation.

The last proposal that touches volleyball is that reclassifying programs can now count as core members of a conference. This is important for those conferences that are trying to retain their automatic qualifier but have to bring in new programs to keep their numbers up.

The only proposal that was defeated was the one that wanted to add equestrian to the emerging sports for women list. I do feel bad for all of the volleyball playing horse lovers out there on this one.

You can find an article on all of this hereif you want more specifics.
