It’s been a LONG time since I last wrote a new piece. I’ve been mostly focusing on building Off The Cuff Radio(Which is my radio show every friday night) as a brand and been basically saying what I’ve been wanting to write on the air. I’ve been waiting for a scenario to help me regain that writers itch and this whole vendetta between Pusha T and Drake was the lightening rod that I needed to get back into the game.

How this started

BAPE

Now for those whom are just catching up, Let me remind the readers that this issue between The Clipse and Cash Money has been going on for almost a decade in a half. Alleged rumors that Pharell and The Clipse(Whom is Pusha’s group with his brother Malice) didn’t receive any compensation from Baby.  Then Lil Wayne appeared on the cover of Vibe wearing the clothing BAPE . BAPE was a trademark of the Clipse’s at the time and they saw it as Wayne was biting their style. So for the past several years Pusha and Wayne has traded  barbs on wax. Most notably Exodus 23:1 where Pusha took it to the next level by claiming either Drake or Wayne are both caught up in slave record deals.

Wayne responded with Goulish which dissed Pusha T by name:

Drake then dropped subliminals on the track 2 Birds and one stone which took aim at his then rival Meek Mill, Pusha T, and Kid Cudi:

But really it’s you with all the drug dealer storiesThat’s gotta stop, thoughYou made a couple chops and now you think you ChapoIf you ask me though, you ain’t lining the trunk with kilosYou bagging weed watching Pacino with all your niggasLike, “This what we need to be on,” but you never went liveYou middle-man in this shit, boy, you was never them guysI can tell, ’cause I look most of you dead in your eyesAnd you’ll be tryna sell that story for the rest of your lives

How the Story of Adidon became a game changer:

Timing:

What makes a diss record so impactful first of all is timing. Ice Cube for example didn’t rush a response 24 hours after NWA dropped Real Niggaz. He literally waited months until he released his highly anticipated second album titled Death Certificate and held it for the final track on the album.  Nas not only waited months until around the time Stillmatic was gonna drop, He also released Ether to the public on JayZ’s Birthday.  The results were both No Vaseline and Ether being widely known as possibly the most impactful diss records of all time.

The Story of Adidon literally came almost 4 days after Drake released his response to Infrared. The Memes and Social media were clowning Pusha heavily and like Meek,  The Industry put Pusha on a 24 hour shot clock to respond. The industry were eager to crown Drake as the victor once again. The  Duppy freestyle to Drakes credit was pretty vicious and really had Pusha’s career on the ropes for the most part .  Plus he was in album mode and was ready to drop possibly one of the biggest releases of the summer.

Pusha waited until the memes got old and folks stopped BBQing on Memorial Weekend to finally respond.  The timing of the release clearly shook up Drake’s camp because many didn’t think Pusha was gonna say anything at all .

Beat Selection:

Beat Selection is the key to holding the new listeners attention. Both Camron and Meek Mill took heavy lossess due to poor mixing of their diss records Wanna Know and Dinner Time. You could clearly tell that those two were under pressure and proceeded to release songs that you could barely hear it .   sounded more confident as ever rhyming over The Story of O.J. He cleverly chose JayZ’s Story of OJ instrumental because that song clearly dealt with the angle he chose to address Drake and that was his alleged “cooning” with Drizzy pictured in Blackface.

Background research and fact digging:

Many rappers today respond usually respond with the predictable  ough guy retorts in battles: “I’m better than you, I have a flyer bitch than you, I have more money than you or Ill kill you and your mama”. Or in Drake’s case, He probably thought Pusha was gonna hit him with the “You too soft for hip hop” ” You use Ghostwriters” response that many of his peers have used. Pusha quietly  did some research and attacked Drake in a different angle.

The Blackface pictures was something Drake and his camp never expected. The public never even knew they existed and it pressured Drake to release a whole press release.  Pusha strategically gave the Gossip/Bossip/ Shade Room crowd juicy gossip by exposing that he been hiding a child and that he impregnated a porn star. After doing alot of fact checking, Pusha’s claims ended up being true.

Vicious Punchlines:

Whats missing within many battles are the punchlines. Punchlines that make you fastfoward and make your face scrunch. Punchlines are what blood thirsty battle fans love to hear and Pusha made sure he delivered on that level as well:

Pusha once again brought up Baby strong arming those Young Money artists out of their earned royalties. This could also mean that Drake has so many people in his pockets.  If you read the liner notes from his first album, You’ll see everyone from J Prince, Universal, Cash Money, Motown all getting credits. He also mentioned how Drake been trying to show more aggression through his music over the years and thats compensating for something he’s hiding.

Then he takes aim at Drake’s ethnicity and at his  father for wearing loud Steve Harvey suits looking like a clown. But the most vicious and most disrespectful shot on this record was aimed at his friend/producer Noah Shebib formally known as 40  from OVO for having Multiple Scoliosis:

OVO 40, hunched over like he 80—tick, tick, tickHow much time he got? That man is sick, sick, sickI got the devil flow, nigga—six-six-sixSurgical summer with it—snip, snip, snip

The Industry response

act:

The response from Pusha to Drake have sent shock-waves through the Entertainment industry.  People were shocked that Drake whom responded so confidently to Pusha’s infrared all of a sudden vanished. There have been talks of an alleged response but to no avail. There been all kinds of rumors spreading that Drake has the ultimate response(According to J Prince) that would hurt G.O.O.D. Music but Drake wont release it out of respect.

The industry, bloggers and rappers alike have even went on to say that Pusha went too far and personal. There have been alleged rumors that this could possibly end up in court(which is silly). Its even gotten bad for the OVO camp to where J Prince had to step in and call the whole beef off.

Due to the outrage and response from the business. Do you consider The Story of Adidon a top 5 diss record based off impact? We love to hear your thoughts!
