Triple-A baseball has announced their postseason All-Star teams recently. The list for the International League had one player from the Pittsburgh Pirates system make the team.
Shortstop Cam Devanney was the lone Pittsburgh Pirates farmhand honored on the team. Devanney played in 69 games for Triple-A Omaha of the Kansas City Royals farm system prior to be being acquired by Pittsburgh in a trade for Adam Frazier. He hit 18 home runs with a .272 average and 55 RBI in his time with the Stormchasers this season.
He then played in 34 games for Indianapolis hitting .256 with two home runs and 11 RBI prior to receiving a September call-up to Pittsburgh and making his Major League debut. In 14 games he hit .139 with no home runs and one RBI.
Devanney is not ranked in the top 30 Pirates prospects.
It’s good to see him make the team and give the Pirates a representative on the list. Though will this help Devanney become a regular starter in Pittsburgh has yet to be seen. Heading into spring training, he should at least get an invite to camp and maybe be in the mix for a bench role. Yet if he is penciled in as a starter the Pirates could be in trouble, if he continues to struggle hitting.
It’s also a bit disappointing to only see one All-Star from an Indianapolis team that won 87 games and finished with the best overall record in the International League West division. You would think that having some team success would help the get more spots on the All-Star team.
Either way it’s good to see Devanney make the team and should be an interesting topic to discuss in the offseason on his future with the Pirates.
