Der Golem (The Golem) (1920)

Directors: Paul Wegener, Carl Boese
Starring: Paul Wegener, Albert Steinrück, Ernst Deutsch
In 16th-century Prague, a rabbi creates the Golem – a giant creature made of clay. Using sorcery, he brings the creature to life in order to protect the Jews of Prague from persecution.
The stars reveal to Rabbi Loew the Jews are threatened by a severe harm. When the Emperor declare Jews must leave the city, Loew decides to help the Jews. He builds a clay figure, which comes to life with the alignment of the celestial bodies. With an amulet placed on the golem’s chest, it will be alive as long as he wears it.
The large clay figure, known as the Golem, becomes Loew’s servant. Meanwhile Florian – who is in service of the Emperor – starts seeing Loew’s daughter, Miriam. But Loew’s assistant, rabbi Famulus, also has feelings for Miriam.
Being a creation who is affected by astrological movements, the Golem soon becomes a threat to its very creator, and starts causing mayhem and destruction. These scenes were very well made for its time. The film has an excellent production design with good visuals. The film also shows us to never under estimate the power of a child. Interesting.
‘The Golem’ contains many different elements; from good will to forbidden love and jealousy, and even propaganda for the Jews.
In German. (Silent Film)
Would I watch it again? I don’t think so.
