Day of the Dead (1985)

Director: George A. Romero
Starring: Lori Cardille, Terry Alexander, Joseph Pilato
A small group of military officers and scientists dwell in an underground bunker as the world above is overrun by zombies.
‘Day of the Dead’ is different to most zombie films. The zombie attacks are few and far between, and the film revolves more around conflict between a handful of survivors living in an underground bunker. (I did find the conflict a bit too much and unpleasant at one stage).
This is one of the most in-depth zombie films I’ve seen, where they actually study and analyze these creatures, and try to either find a cure for them, or teach them to behave. Logan (portrayed by Richard Liberty) was at the forefront of these tests and by far the most interesting character. The film is very well acted, even by the zombies – Bub in particular, whom I really enjoyed watching. Bub is a trained zombie, and played a pivotal role towards the end.
Don’t be fooled, though, this is still a zombie horror film. The make-up effects are fantastic. The film is very gory, graphic and disgusting. Don’t eat whilst watching the end!!!
‘Day of the Dead’ won awards for Best Make-up and Best Actress. It was a moderate box office hit, earning $5 million on a $3.5 million budget.
Would I watch it again? Maybe.
