Curiosity, Grit and Real Teacher Feedback – Watching TED Videos

I haven’t done it in a while but I watched a few TED Videos.  The latest uploads were about education and I watched a few.  I learnt a couple of things:

CURIOSITY – THE BUZZWORD IN EDUCATION

A few of the Talks on education were about utilising curiosity in decreasing dropout rates in US Schools.  This makes sense because I do sometimes go on wild sprees on YouTube and Wikipedia on one thing and then it goes to the next and the next and before I know it, it’s 6am.

GRIT – THE PREDICTOR OF SUCCESS

Another TED Talk by Angela Lee Duckworth had this line: successful people has nothing to do with IQ, social intelligence, good looks but grit.  Grit is a combination of passion and perseverance for long term goals.  This was preaching to the choir as I am a huge believer in finding your passion and the perseverance will come easy.  It comes easy because you love what you’re doing!  I have written about this before (see link).  I will be interested in the kind of further research she will come out with.

REAL TEACHER FEEDBACK – UTILISING VIDEO

I watched a TED Talk by Bill Gates and he talked about the need for real teacher feedback.  He stated that 98% of teachers just got one word of feedback: satisfactory.  One component to give effective teacher feedback was by video.  In the example given by Bill Gates, a teacher would film her lesson and subsequently she would perform some reflective practice in conjunction with the video.  I was watching that and I was thinking:

If there was a job going like that, I’m in!  But I’m still passionate about sports performance analysis.
