Coveting others’ Costco carts

Do you ever look into other people’s Costco carts and wish you could go home with them instead? I do. Although I tend to purchase my favorite products at Costco on a regular basis, there are definitely food items that I would like to try or to have for an occasional treat and non-food items that I would like to own if I was not the one paying for it.

Obviously Costco packages are often much too large for one person…or even for one family. Therefore, there are definitely products that I would like to buy but cannot even imagine what to do with the rest…unless I decided to supply work and my condo with treats forever. Sometimes I want these items because they look good but I have never tried them or because I know they are good but could never even come close to finishing them.

Here are some of those items (so if you buy these, you may find me in your trunk when you get home 😜)

-Chocolate Layer cake. After eyeing this cake for years but never having a good excuse to buy it, my family finally purchased it a few years ago for a family birthday. It was delicious. Super fudgy and rich. The serving satisfied my curiosity but it doesn’t mean I wouldn’t like to have it again…but it is just so big!

-Cheesecake. When I was young, I used to watch the Golden Girls with my grandma and, in true GG fashion, she would often buy me cheesecake to have with her (just like “the girls” did…although our treat was eaten around 8 pm rather than midnight.) Therefore, in addition to loving the taste itself, I love the associations with cheesecake (and I know grandma still loves it too). I have never tried the Costco version because, again, it is just so big, and unfortunately cheesecake doesn’t seem to be a commonly craved dessert that people would share with me. I have frozen similarly large cheesecakes in the past though, so that might be a solution.

-Strawberries/peaches/pears/cherries. I adore fresh fruit. It tends to be on sale seasonally for decent prices in the supermarket, but the produce in Costco always looks and smells so delicious. However, the quantities are just so big that, even if I ate strawberries until I had a stomachache every day for a week, I would lose a bunch to rot. Similarly, I can’t even imagine what I would do with about 20 large pears.

-The huge teddy bear…I don’t think I need to say more.

-The Vitamix blender that the often have on display to demonstrate the smoothie-making process. I love smoothies and frappes (milkshakes for non-Bostonians) so a high-quality blender would be a great addition to my kitchen…but I am not willing to spend the money for it.

-Electric warming blanket. I remember being very young and having an electric blanket. It was a terribly ugly mustard color and extremely clunky due to the wires and plugs, but it sure was warm (very helpful given that we spent most weekends in New Hampshire). On the very cold days in Boston, I often miss being under a heated blanket, but, although I am sure they are safer now, I still worry about the potential for a fire.

What are some products that would make you wish you could go home with (or at least visit) the purchaser?
