Corregidor 2

Next stop: The Mile-long Barracks.  It wasn’t exactly a mile long, that was a bit of an exaggeration, but it was the longest of its kind way back then.  This was where most of the soldiers where stationed, and it was a plush home for most army standards.  You could still see remnants of its former glory.  An abandoned swimming pool betrayed its glorious past:

One thing that really fascinates me about old structures like castles and dungeons and barracks that used to house so many (now dead) people, is the same thing that creeps me out — my imagination could almost see them walking around as they did when they inhabited the place.  I could almost hear the horseplay of the American soldiers and the screams when the Japanese attacked.  You could run away with stories in your head, if you let it.  But all that is left is rubble left by a horrible, horrible war…

It was just weird because as I was imagining the sounds of war, as the horrors of World War II played out in my head, I suddenly started hearing the sound of a chopper flying overhead.  I had to shake myself out of the reverie when I realized that there was really a helicopter so I decided to take a shot:

After an overload of ruins, we moved on to the next stop…

Malinta Tunnel is the highlight of the Corregidor trip, with its light and sound show.  Of course we skipped that since we wanted to have the tunnel to ourselves.

The tunnel was not just the safest place in the island during a bomb raid, it was also historically important since this was where Manuel L. Quezon and Sergio Osmeña took their oaths of office as President and Vice-President of the Philippine Commonwealth.

Photographically we hardly got any decent pictures since it was pitch black inside the actual tunnel, so it was kinda hard for us to find the right shot.

We also came upon this creepy-looking bunch of mangled roots that looked like a crucified man on the beams of the ruins.

Here’s a closer look…

We had quite a blast shooting that alien creature.

(To Be Concluded…)
