Communion (1989)

Director: Philippe Mora
Starring: Christopher Walken, Lindsay Crouse, Frances Sternhagen
Oct.4 and Dec.26 the Strieber family drives from NYC to their cabin in the woods. Both nights there are some powerful lights outside and maybe aliens. The dad is mentally affected by the “bad dream”, goes to the shrink and is hypnotized.
Supposedly based on fact, ‘Communion’ revolves around real-life author Whitley Strieber, who believes he witnessed an alien encounter. Classified as a horror, the only horror was having to sit through this dreary movie.
Strieber first saw the aliens when him and his wife and son, together with friends of theirs went to a cabin for the weekend. On the first night, they all saw blinding lights and shortly thereafter Strieber saw an alien – or at least he thought he did.
The rest of the movie tries to prove Strieber did in fact see aliens. Off course, he could have been dreaming, hallucinating, or simply been fantasizing about his next book – especially since he had writer’s block.
Oh, whatever, there was nothing interesting here. This was rather weird, very slow moving, and very boring. (Actually, I couldn’t decide whether I found it weird, or just plain stupid). The characters – especially Strieber – also acted and reacted in the strangest ways given their circumstances (not natural at all).
I couldn’t wait for this bore fest to end. Needless to say, the film was a box office failure, and was also panned by Strieber himself.
Would I watch it again? Nope!
