Director: Renny Harlin

Starring: Sylvester Stallone, Michael Rooker, John Lithgow

A botched mid-air heist results in suitcases full of cash being searched for by various groups throughout the Rocky Mountains.

‘Cliffhanger’ is a good old-fashioned action adventure thriller with a simple premise and without a twist ending. After a nerve wrecking opening scene I knew what was in store for me, and I was looking forward to it!

The film revolves around rescue worker Gabe (Stallone), who blames himself for a friend’s freak accident, and coming to terms with what happened. He then finds himself on another ‘rescue mission’, but soon discovers there’s much more than meets the eye, and the mission becomes a fight for survival. John Lithgow stars as the film’s antagonist, Eric Qualen – mastermind of a cash heist. This man was born to do bad guy roles! He is excellent! Stallone also makes for a credible hero.

The opening scene determined the character actions for the rest of the movie. This was well set-up and made me understand the main characters better, and root for protagonists Gabe, and Hal (Michael Rooker). I loved the adventure element and setting on the mountain.

There’s lots of action, intrigue and suspense to keep the viewer glued to the screen. This is a really exciting film, with a good climax. Pure entertainment!

‘Cliffhanger’ was a major success, earning $255 million on a $70 million budget. It received 3 Oscar nominations (Best Sound, Best Effects Sound Effects Editing, Best Effects Visual Effects).

Would I watch it again? Yes.
