Christian, Fear Not
“I will praise You, O LORD, with my whole heart; I will tell of all Your marvelous works. I will be glad and rejoice in You; I will sing praise to Your name, O Most High.” (Psalm 9:1-2)
Christians are not to be fearful. We are not people who should live day-to-day passing form one fear to the next. We are people of hope.
Just read Psalm 9.
God’s sovereign rule is on David’s mind. In these 2 verses, there are 4 “I will’s” which show us that David is able and interested in submitting himself to the sovereignty of God.
David has much to celebrate regarding God’s demonstrated sovereignty: the defeat of Goliath, sparing his life from Saul, delivering him from the Philistines, giving him victory over Absalom, etc.).
For David, his therapy for fear was God’s sovereignty. He didn’t need a couch or therapist or medication to address his fears. He simply needed a dose of meditating on God’s sovereignty.
How does praising God for His sovereign rule remove fear? It reminds us that people or circumstances or other things that make us anxious or worrisome or fearful should not dominate our life; they should not rule or dictate us. God’s sovereign rule should.
What an encouragement the sovereignty of God should be for the believer! It can be intimidating or uncomfortable at first, but it is such a comfort when we come to even a small understanding of it’s implications.
Charles Spurgeon has given us this exhortation about God’s sovereignty – “Cheer up Christian! Things are not left to chance: no blind fate rules the world. God hath purposes, and those purposes are fulfilled. God hath plans, and those plans are wise, and never can be dislocated.”
In short, Christian, why this fear?
